RCS Haven E-Bulletin – April 2012

Greetings, and welcome to our bulletin full of information on exciting Russian events!

This issue contains a round-up of Russian or connected to Russia events in Scotland and throughout the rest of the UK in the month of April and job vacancies and announcements.
RCS Haven is welcoming anyone who is interested in studying Russian language, literature and culture. We have English and Russian language lessons. There are a library, Art studio for children and Web-design Studio.
Also, the centre provides consultations in law, finance and other aspects of work and business in Russia and Britain.

Spring update at Centre Haven and Russian school

Dear friends, we would like to greet you all with celebration of Easter!
However, although this year catholic Easter and orthodox Easter don’t fall on the same day, this day still remains a great event for everybody.
The Russian centre and school will be closed from 6 till 17th of April.
After the spring holiday, changes are expected in the school curriculum. As a result of a parent meeting which took place on 24th of March, a new strategy was developed. Blocks of lessons for different themes will be integrated into Russian lessons and developed during art and music lessons. Due to new classes opening, everybody is welcome to participate in the competition for giving names to different age groups.
There will be changes in the structure of English lessons due to a new English teacher. Kirsten is a specialist in the area of English literature. She will be working together with Duncan in the group of English lessons for adults. She will also be helping teenagers to pass English at SQA level.
See you all after spring break!

Chekhov's reputation in the West as 'that gloomy Russian playwright' has meant that the comic stories he wrote in his twenties have been consistently overlooked. Harvey Pitcher has long been campaigning for their wider appreciation. In his talk he will outline the different kinds of humour that Chekhov deployed - comedy of situation, comedy of subversion, comedy of surprise, and surreal comedy - illustrating each genre with readings of favourite passages from his own translations. He describes his latest book, Responding to Chekhov: The Journey of a Lifetime (Swallow House Books, 2010) as "a kind of debriefing after a long and varied journey"

Belka Productions is proud to present the UK premiere of this landmark Russian love story, by one of the greatest twentieth-century playwrights.
Love starts to blossom in the hostile terrain of the Soviet bloc when chance brings young Victor to beautiful Polish singer Helya at a concert hall in Moscow. But in Stalin's brutally controlled empire their love simply cannot be, and over the span of two decades of missed opportunitites and thwarted beginnings, from Moscow to Warsaw and back again, their passionate desire matures into an altogether different and more moving kind of love.
Already a worldwide sensation having been performed all over Europe, Canada and the United Stated, Leonid Zorin's timeless story of the fragility and resillience of love in a loveless land finally makes its way to the UK

Staged during Chichester Festival Theatre’s very first season in 1962, Uncle Vanya has become a key part of its history, so it is particularly fitting that a new production of this enduring play opens Festival 2012, Chichester’s 50th Anniversary season.
For years Vanya and his niece have worked tirelessly to keep the family’s run-down estate from ruin. The return of Vanya’s brother-in-law and his captivating wife, coupled with the visits of the charismatic Doctor Astrov, bring old loyalties and new loves into conflict in Chekhov’s masterly exploration of his characters’ passions, hopes and desires.
