Unusual project for Kurosawa, who went to Russia due to lack of work in his native country. The film is beautifully shot, especially the eerie Siberian landscapes, but the plot -- concerning the meeting between a 'civilised' Russian military captain and a 'primitive' Oriental trapper -- smacks of simplistic Mosfilm party line.

A beautiful evocation of memory, life and loss, and an undisputed masterpiece by its legendary master director Andrei Tarkovsky. Featuring some of the greatest artistry in all of cinema - particularly in its mesmerising interplay between beautifully poetic imagery; the spoken poetry of the director's father, Arseny Tarkovsky; and the music of Artemiev, Bach, Pergolesi and Henry Purcell - he creates a work both intensely personal yet still immediately accessible: as much a dream as it is a film.

Ask most people to name a ballet, and Swan Lake will doubtless be near the top of the list. There's a reason it has endured-as well as boasting a score by Tchaikovsky, it also tells the timeless tale of Prince Siegfried, who falls in love with the beautiful Swan Queen, Odette.
Now, the Moscow City Ballet is bringing Britain its take on the classic.
