In 1950, artist Igor Savitsky travelled to Karakalpakstan in the Russian steppes as part of an official Soviet ethnographic expedition. He stayed on when the expedition was over, collecting clothes, items, art and jewellery of the local Karakalpak people, a project for which the Soviet government funded a museum; but he also began to collect the avant-garde Russian art that the Soviets were determined to destroy. The result, the Karakalpakstan State Museum of Art, is not only a memorial to the culture of the local people but also one of the greatest archives of mid-20th century Russian art in the world. Marinika Babanazarova has written a biography of Savitsky, and the book launch also includes the screening of Amanda Pope and Tchavdar Georgiev's award-documentary about him, The Desert of Forbidden Art.

This incredible documentary recounts the dramatic events that unfolded in February 2003, after Russia's richest man, Mikhail Khodorkovsky, challenged President Vladmir Putin over alleged government corruption during a live televised debate at the Kremlin.
This public act of dissent led to the two titans locking horns, with Putin threatening Khodorkovsky with a lengthy prison term upon his return from exile. Remarkably, Khodorkovsky returned head held high to meet his fate.
German director Cyril Tuschi approaches this extraordinary personal journey with compassion and curiosity, painting an intimate portrait of a complex figure whose passage from socialist dreamer to celebrity inmate would capture a nation's imagination.

Ask most people to name a ballet, and Swan Lake will doubtless be near the top of the list. There's a reason it has endured-as well as boasting a score by Tchaikovsky, it also tells the timeless tale of Prince Siegfried, who falls in love with the beautiful Swan Queen, Odette. The fable's soaring climax, which sees the power of true love conquer the forces of evil, has been enchanting audiences for over a century. RUSSIA'S OTHER CULTURE: SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY IN THE 20TH CENTURY in association with RBCC
After the civil war, the Bolsheviks turned to the revolutionary science of genetics for help in securing the Soviet food supply. The young Soviet Union became a world leader in genetics and shared its knowledge with Germany. Then Stalin’s impatience and suspicion destroyed the field and virtually wiped out Russian agriculture. Stalin was right to be suspicious: genetics had promised the world a future of health and longevity, but by the 1940s it was delivering death camps and human vivisection. Genetic advances have made possible our world of plenty – but why did the human cost have to be so high?

Rock from the Russian singer and musician.
The critically acclaimed musician Zemfira comes to London for one night only.. “Zemfira is Elvis, the Sex Pistols and Courtney Love rolled into one” Salon.com.
Born in 1976 in Ufa, Bashkortistan, Zemfira graduated from music school and worked as a radio engineer before the release of her debut album ‘Zemfira’ in 1998 catapulted her to stardom. Since then she has continued to release music and perform to great critical acclaim. Few Russian musicians can claim to match the regard with which Zemfira is held in by her legions of fans both in Russia and abroad. Her varied musical output ranges from savage rock riffs to tender acoustic ballads, accompanied by intensely personal and emotive lyrics. Fresh off the back of her recent Russia tour ‘12’, where Zemfira and her band performed in 12 specially selected Russian cities, this is unique opportunity to see and hear one of Russia’s most popular and talented artists.

The Last Day of the Soviet Union. Talk
The Soviet Union came to an end on December 25th 1991, with the resignation of President Mikhail Gorbachev, the transfer of the nuclear suitcase to the president of Russia, Boris Yeltsin, and the lowering of the Red Flag from the Kremlin. My talk will focus on how and in what way the Soviet Union disintergrated so abruptly that day, without a shot being fired, and the significance in this regard of two events in the weeks beforehand; the meeting in a Belarus forest on December 7-8 at which the leaders of Russia, Belarus and Ukraine decided to ‘collapse’ the Soviet Union, and the drink-fuelled encounter between Gorbachev and Yeltsin in the Kremlin’s Walnut Room on December 23rd at which Gorbachev finally accepted the inevitable. It will also look at how the personal antipathy between Gorbachev and Yeltsin contributed to the demise of the Soviet Union, and impacted on the key events of December 25th.

It is one of the most successful and prolific Russian musical groups of the 20th and 21st centuries.

‘Stalin’s Legacy’ details how Josef Stalin and his immediate successors waged war on Mother Nature, viewing it as something that needed to be controlled and marshalled for economic gain rather than respected and nurtured for human survival.
They regarded nature as an enemy that could be overcome by the might of Soviet technology and the brute force of slave labour. Stalin ordered vast networks of canals and irrigation channels be dug by hand in an attempt to transform deserts into lush pastures. He built gigantic dams and reservoirs and diverted the course of major rivers. He used his own citizens as human guinea-pigs for nuclear tests and he conducted top secret biological weapons experiments on islands that had been cleared of all animal and insect life.
