This is the April 2011 edition of the RCS Haven E-Bulletin. There are a number of exciting Russian events occurring in Scotland and across the rest of the UK in April, which we have previewed below in the Events section along with full listings for Orthodox Holy Week church services in Glasgow and Edinburgh. As ever, this newsletter also contains recent news headlines from Russia and the latest job vacancies from our website.
News from RCS Haven this month:
· RCS HAVEN ATTENDS NATIONWIDE RUSSIAN SCHOOLS FORUM
On Sunday 27th March, RCS Haven staff met with more than 120 other participants at Eurolog-UK’s Third Annual Forum for Directors of Overseas Russian Schools in London. The Forum was an opportunity for teachers and school-leaders to share their experiences, and to discuss organisational and methodological issues surrounding the teaching of Russian language and culture, particularly to the children of Russian parents currently living in Britain.
SAVE SLAVONIC LANGUAGES AT THE UNIVERSITY OF GLASGOW!
Staff and students are continuing to mount a spirited campaign against the proposed closure of all three Slavonic language departments (Russian, Polish and Czech) at the University of Glasgow, as part of a package of radical cost-cutting measures. Register your own objection to the plans by signing this online petition, set up by department staff:
· RUSSIAN-LANGUAGE COURSES IN KARELIA – SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE
The Russian Language School ‘Enjoy Russian’ in Petrozavodsk, Karelia, offers a series of intensive, personalised Russian-language courses for students of all levels, lasting anywhere from two weeks up to three months. Several non-Russian RCS Haven members have previously attended courses at the school and they all highly recommend it. What is more, the school is currently offering to waive tuition fees for successful applicants to their Spring and Summer 2011 programmes. For more information and to apply, visit the school’s website: http://enjoyrussian.com/
We would also like to remind you of the range of services and facilities RCS Haven offers its members, all of which continue in April: language and cultural classes for children and adults, a well-stocked book and DVD library, translation and interpretation services from our sister organisation RCS Lingua, and specialist individual legal, financial and employment advice. For up-to-the-minute news and further information about our centre, please visit our website, http://www.rcshaven.org.uk, or follow us on Facebook and Twitter.
Wishing you a very happy and peaceful Easter,
All the staff and volunteers at RCS Haven

Cows will be calmer, doctors happier and crooks less active. That's the thinking as Russia puts forward its clocks for the last time this weekend. The two women depend on one another, but their relationship is to be torn apart by dramatic revelations about each of their pasts. This exhibition marks a welcome return to the Scotland Russia Institute for Olga Geoghegan, whose work was the subject of the Institute’s very first exhibition in 2008. Geoghegan was born in the town of Ukhta, in Russia’s frozen north, and studied in St. Petersburg, but she now lives and works in London. Alienation is one of the key themes of her moving and unsettling paintings, in which isolated figures and objects emerge from richly-coloured and -textured backgrounds reminiscent of Vermeer and Velasquez. Prior to this show, her artwork has been exhibited in Europe, Russia and America.

· Wednesday 2nd February – Thursday 30th June: Exhibition, ‘Gomel: A Belarusian Town at War’, Aberdeen
In 2010, Aberdeen and the Belarusian town of Gomel celebrated two decades of being twinned. Today, Gomel is a thriving, bustling city, but during the Second World War the city was devastated, both by fighting and by a brutal Nazi occupation that lasted from 1941 to ’43. This exhibition commemorates these dark years in the city’s history and contains a selection of unique items on loan from the Gomel Museum of Military Glory, as well as contemporary Red Army uniforms, equipment and weapons. When viewing these objects visitors are forced to consider the great sacrifice of the Belarusian people in the war (one third of the country’s population died in WWII), alongside recurring themes of resistance, the Holocaust and the role of women during the conflict.

The Rest of the UK:
· Tuesday 29th March – Saturday 23rd April: Musical, ‘Bed and Sofa’, London
European premiere of the award-winning off-Broadway musical, based on Russian director Abram Room’s ground-breaking and controversial 1926 silent-movie comedy, ‘Bed and Sofa’. The plot presents a ménage-a-trois with a twist, based around the chronic housing shortage in Moscow in the early years of the Russian Revolution. Nikolai works and lives in a cramped apartment with his wife Ludmilla. However, when Nikolai’s friend Volodia arrives in the city with nowhere to stay, he is invited to share their flat, with surprising results..! This is a smart, funny and unique musical adaptation, but also an ‘eleganthomage’ to the silent movie genre – for example, all the dialogue and song lyrics are taken directly from the original film’s title-cards. Composer Polly Pen and lyricist Laurence Klavan both won Obie awards for their work on the musical when it premiered in New York.

· Friday 1st April: Lecture, Alexander Lipnitsky talks about Rock (Russian-language), London
Alexander Lipnitsky is a legendary figure in Russian rock music history – he was one of the founding members of hugely influential group Zvuki Mu, and throughout the 1980s and ‘90s his Moscow apartment, nicknamed ‘The Rock Salon’, was a notorious hang-out for touring bands from across Russia. At this informal event Lipnitsky will be discussing the differing development of rock music in Moscow and St. Petersburg in the 1970s and ‘80s, using the careers of two important bands from those cities – his own Zvuki Mu, and St. Petersburg’s Akvarium – as examples. There will also be an open Q&A session after the talk. (The talk and discussion will both be conducted in Russian.)

This exhibition has been commissioned by Pushkin House to commemorate the 65th anniversary of the liberation of Belarus in the Second World War. Brest is an ancient town built on a convergence of trade routes, and as such has been the scene of conflict and confrontation for centuries. The city’s modern fortress was built in the wake of Napoleon’s invasion of Russia in 1812, and by 1914 it was the largest military complex in the Tsarist Empire. In the summer of 1941 it was site of the first major battle of WWII on the Eastern Front, during which the garrison held out for over a month despite being vastly outnumbered by their Nazi opposition. After the war it was named a ‘Hero Fortress of the Soviet Union’ in honour of this courageous act of defiance. This photographic exhibition tells the story of the Fortress before, during and after the war, and also details the post-war construction of monuments to those who lost their lives in the fighting. · Thursday 14th April – Monday 2nd May: Opera, ‘The Tsar’s Bride’ (Russian-language), London
Paul Curran directs Rimsky-Korsakov’s masterpiece ‘The Tsar’s Bride’ in it’s first-ever performance by the prestigious Royal Opera House. Rimsky-Korsakov’s story takes real Russian historical figures and uses them to weave a gripping fictional tale of betrayal and corruption. The opera begins with Tsar Ivan the Terrible choosing Marfa, the daughter of a wealthy merchant, as his new bride, a decision that unleashes a storm of romantic and political jealousy and spells disaster both for Marfa and everyone around her. The opera’s message – that those in power can control, and ultimately ruin, the lives of almost anyone they choose – is still extremely relevant today, and this, combined with the quality of the performances, makes ‘The Tsar’s Bride’ a completely unmissable piece of theatre! (In Russian, with English surtitles.)

In another event to mark the fiftieth anniversary of Yuri Gagarin’s first orbit around the Earth, the Royal Shakespeare Company are staging an exciting new play by acclaimed writer Rona Munro. ‘Little Eagles’ tells the fascinating story of Sergei Korolyov, the chief designer and unsung hero of the Soviet space programme in the 1950s and ‘60s. Korolyov was a brilliant engineer with a passion for space flight, but who faced numerous professional and personal battles throughout his career - both in balancing his own scientific aims with the military demands of his political masters, and in coping with the knowledge that his quest to build bigger and better rockets forced him to put the lives of his pilots, his beloved ‘little eagles’, at greater and greater risk.
