A Russian Suprematist-inspired installation of soundscape and light in another of Summerhall's basement galleries is a sound reference to Malevich’s concept of 'The Black Square', where experience is entirely dependent on a universality and non-objectivity.
Blacksoundwhitesound reflects on the loss of light and the presence of light: a black square within a white square; the negation of objectivity and conventional understanding of time and space – all alluding to the dichotomies of human relationships.

Wed 24 April 5.30pm,
In the 21st century, Russia will finally show the results of its authoritarian experiment. Signs of the decline of the Russian matrix are already visible, although it has managed to survive after the collapse of communism through imitation of liberal democracy and the elite's personal integration into the West. The Kremlin's attempts to prolong its life through coercion and the deterrence of Western influence may have disastrous consequences for both Russia's future and the stability of the Eurasian space. What the potential for Russia's movement toward the rule of law system is, what the future scenarios for Russia are, and what global influence the Russian awakening will have - these are the questions that will be addressed in the lecture.
All are welcome. Entrance is free but by ticket only. Please sign up for tickets via http://ericksonlecture.eventbrite.co.uk

Talk by Dr Andrei Rogatchevski
The ‘enfant terrible’ of Russian literature, Eduard Limonov (b. 1943), a founder of the notorious National Bolshevik Party (NBP; 1993-2007), has almost imperceptibly grown into a ‘father figure’ for several generations of younger Russian authors of both sexes. Since at least the early 1990s, many of them have increasingly been fascinated by him and have been trying to imitate him. In May 2006, the literary critic Viktor Toporov noted: ‘Everyone who writes fiction now, writes about the NBP.’ What did Limonov write about and how did his career develop? What does it now mean to be a ‘Limonovian’?
These are some of the questions that Dr Andrei Rogatchevski will answer in his talk, which illustrates well the cross-over between the boundaries of the writer and political activist.

Russian Theatre in 2013 is something of a hydra-headed monster, with something for everyone to love and hate. The epithets run the gamut of all possibilities - avant-garde, traditional, political, commercial, psychological and physical. These often competing and mutually-exclusive styles have their champions and adherents. Yesterday's rebels are today's classics, and tomorrow's rebels are already gaining a foothold. It is a highly dynamic artistic territory in a country where the urge for change and the weight of tradition are of nearly equal strength. We also have seen in the last decade a resurgence of new writing that has made Russian theater more responsive to current social and political developments. John Freedman will attempt to put this complex picture into a context that will be accessible to anyone with an interest in Russian culture, history, politics or art.
