RCS Haven E-Bulletin - April 2014

Greetings, and welcome to our bulletin full of information on exciting Russian events.

RCS Haven is welcoming anyone who is interested in studying Russian language, literature and culture. We have English and Russian language lessons. There are a library, Art studio for children and Web-design Studio.
Also, the Centre provides consultations in law, finance and other aspects of work and business in Russia and Britain.

Dunira Strategy signs agreement to promote Lipetskaya Oblast in Russia
On Thursday 20 March during MITT in Moscow, the Scottish company Dunira Strategy signed an agreement to become strategic consultants and deliver a series of feasibility studies, tourism development strategies and investment promotion plans for Lipetsk Oblast.

Every Wednesday, from 18.30 to 20.00, we invite you at the Center “Haven” for an English class. Classes take place in the RCS Haven 11 Duke Street, Glasgow, G40UL

VACANCIES

Russian Speaking Volunteers Wanted
Due to high numbers of Russian Speakers accessing Greater Pollok Integration Network's services we are eager to recruit a computer literate Russian-speaking volunteer to support it's work.
Volunteering On Tuesdays from 13.00 to 15.00 the role would include assisting people to access job opportunities online as well as helping them to design their own CVs.

RCS Haven is looking for Art, Mathematics and Russian teachers.
 
Also, we are looking for volunteers.

Regular events in Scotland

Orthodox Church Services:
The following Scottish churches hold regular/semi-regular Orthodox services (all welcome):
Glasgow: The Parish of St. Kentigern (Russian Orthodox). Services held in Govan Old Church, 866 Govan Road, Glasgow, G51 3UU.
Edinburgh: Orthodox Community of St. Andrew (a mixture of Orthodox faiths. Services held in the Chapel of St. Andrew, 2 Meadow Lane, Edinburgh, EH8 9NR.

Art studio for Children
Art lessons for children are undergoing in RCS Haven.
Under supervision of experienced teachers, a professional artist and a specialist in early development, children study the basics of drawing and painting, language development and drama. All children are welcome on Thursdays from 5pm till 7pm.

Before becoming a full-time writer, Prilepin served as a soldier in Chechnia.  In a colourful back story, he has also been a labourer, security guard, TV and radio actor, and rap musician. Prilepin is a controversial political activist for the National Bolshevik Party and organises The Dissenters’ March in Nizhny Novgorod.

Born in 1954 in Kyrgyzstan, Hamid Ismailov moved to Uzbekistan as a young man. He writes both in Russian and Uzbek and his novels and poetry have been translated into many European languages, including German, French and Spanish. In 1994 he was forced to flee to the UK because of his ‘unacceptable democratic tendencies’. He now works for the BBC World Service.

We all recognize that stereotypes are a gross simplification. The urge to categorize and to generalize nonetheless seems endemic and stereotypes have a surprisingly long life. Professor Cross will trace the origins of British stereotypes of Russia and Russians, follow their modifications and mutations down the centuries and examine the extent to which cultural, social and political factors play a role.
