The Total Dictation is an annual educational event aimed at drawing attention to issues of literacy and at developing a culture of literate writing. In essence, the event is a voluntary free dictation open for everyone taking place at the same time in tens of cities in Russia and around the world (adjusted for time zones). The Total Dictation is a peculiar flashmob event. People unfamiliar with each other learn about the event on the Internet, gather at the same time in one place, do something strange together and then disperse. The first Total Dictation which took place in Glasgow last year brought together people not indifferent towards Russian in Scotland. For those of us living here participation in such a project is not as much a way of increasing literacy but a desire to preserve a communion to this great sacrament – the Russian language. On April 18, 2015 in the Total dictation 354 cities in the different countries of the world will take part.
