RCS Haven E-Bulletin - April 2017

Greetings, and welcome to our bulletin full of information on exciting Russian events.

RCS Haven is welcoming anyone who is interested in studying Russian language, literature and culture. We have English and Russian language lessons. There are a library, Art studio for children and Web-design Studio.
Also, the Centre provides consultations in law, finance and other aspects of work and business in Russia and Britain.


NEWS

New e-book from Viktor Bulkin

We are happy to inform, that recenty the new e-book by Viktor Bulkin, Glasgow-based writer, was published.
Mr Bulkin lives and works on his books in Glasgow, as well as teaching chess in Russian School for children.
 
The new book "Flowers in the flame of war" describes the fate of author's parents during the years of Second World War.
 
Author stresses the importance of keeping family story and of war horrors.
Memory of these tragic days will preserve crimes from happening again in future.

In 2015, we announced the first novel by Viktor Bulkin. This book has developed into the new larger novel, which is now available online in Russian: http://shop.club-neformat.com/01/war/

Author is currently working on hardcopy publishing, meeting with public, translation to English and embodiment of other creative ideas.

Delighted to announce today the details of the next Introduction to Policing Programme (ITPP) course.

The course will run each day between 10am - 4pm each day and will include preparation for the police entrance fitness test, so you will need to bring clothes each week to take part in the fitness sessions (which are great fun so don't worry if your fitness is not good at the moment).

The course is delivered to you free of charge you just need to be able to get yourself to the venue each week.

You need to be able to attend all 4 sessions to get the maximum benefit from this course.

Places will be allocated on a first come first served basis so to book a space sending an email to [email protected]

Once your space has been reserved you will received more information via email about the course.
 
Police Scotland will be bringing along some members of the first ITPP who are at the end of the recruitment process to share their experience of the first ITPP and you will hear directly form the Chief Constable why improving the diversity of Police Scotland workforce is a priority for them.

Speak Russian? Thinking of a new career?
Police Scotland is currently recruiting both police officers and special constables into the organization.  Police Scotland is particularly keen to encourage applications from under-represented members from our communities. In their current recruitment campaign, they are looking to engage with potential applicants from all ethnic minorities and a variety of different backgrounds in an effort to be more representative of the diverse communities that they police.

RCS Haven is looking for Chess and Russian teachers for the Saturday school.
Also, we are looking for volunteers.

EDUCATION 

The School of Russian Centre in Scotland  Haven 
Classes for children are based on Russian teaching methods for primary school level native and non-native speakers.
In the current school year, lessons for all classes except the youngest take place between 11.00 and 2.00pm on Saturdays at Adelphi Centre, 12 Commercial Road, Glasgow G5 0PQ. [email protected]

Art lessons for children are undergoing in RCS Haven.
Under supervision of experienced teachers, a professional artist and a specialist in early development, children study the basics of drawing and painting, language development and drama. All children are welcome on Fridays from 5:30pm till 7:30pm.

Russian and English language courses for adults 
Classes for those who want to study Russian and English language.
Russian lessons on Mondays at Beginners from 18.00 to 19.00; Advanced from 19.00 to 20.00, Intensive Beginners group on Wednesdays from 18.00. to 19.30 (11 Duke Street) and Saturdays at 11.00 (Adelphi Centre).
English lessons on Thursdays at 7.0pm.

Wednesday 12 April, 6pm
The leading contemporary Russian poet, Stanislav Lvovskii, will join us at the Byre’s Literary Café. There will be an informal reading of contemporary Russian poetry and screening of poetic video art. Stanislav Lvovskii is a Russian poet, journalist, translator and researcher, who has published highly acclaimed collections of poems and short stories. Lvovskii’s poetry has been translated into and published in English, French, Chinese, Italian, Georgian and other languages.

An evening of poetry and music. This will include a reading of 20 poems by Osip Mandelstam and the playing of Tchaikovsky’s 12 piano pieces, “The Seasons”. The poems, which will be read between each of the piano pieces, will be read in Russian by Alla Gelich. The pianist will be Nadia Giliova, who graduated from the Gnessin Academy of Music in Moscow and the Royal Academy of Music, London.

Tuesday 25 April, 7.00 pm
Join us for a talk by the leading historian and theorist of 20th and 21st century Russian architecture Vladimir Paperny, who will discuss the new project for Zaryadye Park in Moscow, and will evaluate the park’s role in the political and aesthetic landscape of post-1991 Moscow under Mayors Yuri Luzhkov and Sergey Sobyanin. The lecture is co-organised with the ARCC. In English.

Join Dr Vera Pavlova as she analyses Vsevolod Meyerhold's 1917 “Masquerade.” A play named by contemporaries as the Requiem for the Russian Empire, reflecting the end of the imperial epoch.
The talk analyses "Masquerade" as a socio-cultural and art phenomenon that appeared in-between two epochs and demarcated 'the 'point of no return' - in theatre, in art, in society and in history.

Thursday 27 April, 6.30 pm
2017 marks the centenary of the Russian Revolution. It is hard to justify another event which has so shaped today's Russia and today's world.
In this talk Sir Anthony will assess what was, and was not, genuinely "inevitable" about the revolution, and will explore the parallels between 1917 and the 1991 collapse which gave us the Russia of today.
Sir Anthony Brenton was a British diplomat for over 30 years. He served in the Arab world, the European Union, Washington DC and twice in Moscow, as British Ambassador.
