RCS Haven E-Bulletin - August 2014

Greetings, and welcome to our bulletin full of information on exciting Russian events.

RCS Haven is welcoming anyone who is interested in studying Russian language, literature and culture. We have English and Russian language lessons. There are a library, Art studio for children and Web-design Studio.
Also, the Centre provides consultations in law, finance and other aspects of work and business in Russia and Britain.


NEWS

New academic year
 
Please note that our Russian and English language classes for adults will resume after the summer break on Monday 1st September.
Russian school for children in Glasgow reopens on 30th August. The school’s lessons will take place on Saturdays, at The Adelphi Centre, 12 Commercial Road, Glasgow, G5 0PQ.  Children may be enrolled in the school by telephone, on 0141 552 2144 or by e-mail at: [email protected] 

 
Glasgow City FC Scotlands top womens football club is hosting a Ukranian womens football team here in August and they have asked for help with translating while they are here 8th -14th August.
Do you know any volunteers that may be able to help?

They will be able to pay expenses and supply meals as they may spend some time with the team at the hotel.

Regular events in Scotland

Orthodox Church Services:
The following Scottish churches hold regular/semi-regular Orthodox services (all welcome):
Glasgow: The Parish of St. Kentigern (Russian Orthodox). Services held in Govan Old Church, 866 Govan Road, Glasgow, G51 3UU.
Edinburgh: Orthodox Community of St. Andrew (a mixture of Orthodox faiths. Services held in the Chapel of St. Andrew, 2 Meadow Lane, Edinburgh, EH8 9NR.

Art studio for Children
Art lessons for children are undergoing in RCS Haven.
Under supervision of experienced teachers, a professional artist and a specialist in early development, children study the basics of drawing and painting, language development and drama. All children are welcome on Thursdays from 5pm till 7pm.

From Russia with love! The Thistle is a 75 minute musical with an original Russian script
and score. It is a love story for Scotland, set in the middle ages. Beautifully sung and
performed by a professional cast of ten renowned Russian theatre actors.

The result of McNairn's year spent painting in Russian and the Ukraine, this exhibition looks at cultural intercourse and also features visual love poems.

Edinburgh Festival's first Russian stand-up ever. Igor ruins the stereotypes about Russia
and discovers stereotypes about Britain and the West. Igor tells about his childhood in the
Soviet Union, life in modern Russia and internationally.

The Duel is an adaptation for stage of the homonymous novel written in 1891 by Anton Tcheckov, a devoted Russian storyteller, playwright and novelist.
Although situated in Russia two centuries ago, the play says a lot about our times. We see the struggle between two antagonistic particular sights in a peripheral society, distorted mirror of the Russian and European metropolis.
