RCS Haven E-Bulletin - August 2015

 Greetings, and welcome to our bulletin full of information on exciting Russian events.
RCS Haven is welcoming anyone who is interested in studying Russian language, literature and culture. We have English and Russian language lessons. There are a library, Art studio for children and Web-design Studio.
Also, the Centre provides consultations in law, finance and other aspects of work and business in Russia and Britain.

NEWS

 
On 22nd of July in the central library of Narva (Estonia) there was a presentation of a novel by a Russian-speaking writer Viktor Bulkin, who is based in Glasgow.
This is a family story about the World War 2.
Viktor Bulkin was working on this novel being in Glasgow for the last four years.
Soon meeting with Glaswegian readers is going to be held.
Time and venue is to be confirmed.

Please note that our Russian and English language classes for adults will resume after the summer break on Monday 31st August.
Russian school for children in Glasgow reopens on 29th August. The school’s lessons will take place on Saturdays, at The Adelphi Centre, 12 Commercial Road, Glasgow, G5 0PQ.

Russian school “Znanie” and the London office of Rossotrudnichestvo announced the winners of the All-Britain poem readers contest. We are proud that our student Dana Freimute from Russian School at RCS Haven won one of the main prizes, the second year round! 
The contest “What a Wonderful World!” was dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the Second World War. It was aiming to develop creativity, mutual understanding and tolerance of different cultures in children and teenagers as well as identifying the most talented readers.

Regular events in Scotland

Orthodox Church Services:
The following Scottish churches hold regular/semi-regular Orthodox services (all welcome):
Glasgow: The Parish of St. Kentigern (Russian Orthodox). Services held in Govan Old Church, 866 Govan Road, Glasgow, G51 3UU.
Edinburgh: Orthodox Community of St. Andrew (a mixture of Orthodox faiths. Services held in the Chapel of St. Andrew, 2 Meadow Lane, Edinburgh, EH8 9NR.

Art studio for Children
Art lessons for children are undergoing in RCS Haven.
Under supervision of experienced teachers, a professional artist and a specialist in early development, children study the basics of drawing and painting, language development and drama. All children are welcome on Fridays from 5:30pm till 7:30pm.

A Japanese woman, Shoko, meets Jura, a Russian man in Berlin airport. They develop a friendship and start sharing their dreams about love and freedom. Jura tells the story of Master and Margarita. He also has a dark secret… The play features several short stories mixing reality with fantasy, spirituality with secularism, music with dance, that are all connected to the main theme. Shoko’s unique solo performance displays her versatile acting skills as she plays all the characters.

Today Director of the Scottish Poetry Library Robyn Marsack looks at Eugene Onegin by Alexander Pushkin. This classic Russian novel is written in verse and was originally published in serial form. It depicts the life of the eponymous hero and is a glimpse into the social and intellectual world of Russian society. Expect an open discussion from the start: read the book ahead of the event or be inspired to pick it up afterwards.
