Dr Geieva will consider the difficult tasks Yeltsin faced – disbanding the Soviet Empire and building new, democratic Russia with a free-market economy, but also the unfortunate and often inevitable consequences of his policies – troubled relations with former Soviet countries, the rise of the oligarch class, and corruption throughout the political and legal system. The bulk of his collection consists of minutes of CPSU Central Committee/Politburo meetings, in which Soviet leaders confirm the existence of widespread subversion occurring in the West in the 1970s and ‘80s. At this event he will focus on the infiltration of British politics during this time, particularly the Labour party – he will show documents proving that senior Labour politicians held meetings with representatives of the Kremlin, and that Soviet agents within the party were hugely instrumental in choosing and promoting its next generation of leaders, including Tony Blair and Gordon Brown...
