Bach's Goldberg Variations are amongst the most profound and exhilarating keyboard works ever written, and it's no surprise that they've been adapted for other instruments by musicians who want to have a crack at the Goldbergs' incredible variety and richness. One such is the Russian violinist, conductor and arranger Dmitry Sitkovetsky, whose version of the work for string orchestra has had a runaway success. The Scottish Ensemble couples the Sitkovetsky arrangement with Britten's boisterous Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge, the work that made the young composer's name back in 1937.

Sun 16 Dec
In a late career stunted by a controversial imprisonment lasting throughout most of the 1970s (on combined charges of 'homosexuality and illegal traffic in religious icons'), Armenian filmmaker Sergei Paradjanov managed to produce only two fiction films in the final twenty years of his life.  Made in the wake immediately following the long-delayed - although still censored - 1983 release of The Colour of Pomegranates (the original release of which was halted in 1968), these films proved hardly less astonishing than those of his pre-imprisonment days.  Based on Georgian and Azerbaijani folktales, they demonstrate all the great visual verve of Paradjanov's earlier work, despite the now-miniscule funding he was provided to make them on.  Sadly, Paradjanov succumbed to cancer before completing a third film, Исповедь/Confession, in 1990, thus leaving these two marvels to serve as the final testaments to his tragically forestalled cinematic genius.

A reading in Russian by Alla Gelich of Pushkin's short story, with musical accompaniment by Nadia Giliova.'
The Pushkin Club celebrates the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Borodino with a reading of Pushkin’s short story “The Blizzard” («ÐœÐµÑ‚ель»), interspersed with playing of the music which Georgy Sviridov wrote for the eponymous film. The short story “The Blizzard” was written by Pushkin in 1830 during his three months’ enforced stay at the estate of Boldino near Nizhny Novgorod as a result of an outbreak of cholera – the so-called “Boldino Autumn” («Ð‘олдинская Осень»), which was a period of unprecedented creativity for Pushkin. “The Blizzard” was written in one day and is one of five prose tales known as “Tales of Belkin” («ÐŸÐ¾Ð²ÐµÑÑ‚и Белкина»).

Book Launch with Marina Frolova-Walker and Jonathan Walker
Language: In English
The Revolution! The Civil War! The New State! The world looked on at what might have become a new utopia. That it didn’t happen we now know but the 1920s were an exciting period of invention in all walks of Russian life. Music was no exception, as revealed in this new book Music and Soviet Power 1917-1932 by Marina Frolova-Walker and Jonathan Walker. The authors present their work amidst live performance of some true rarities such as Mosolov’s Four Advertisements for voice and piano and some very rarely heard piano pieces.
The October Revolution of 1917 tore the fabric of Russian musical life: institutions collapsed, and leading composers emigrated or fell into silence. But in 1932, at the outset of the ‘socialist realist’ period, a new Stalinist music culture was emerging. Between these two dates lies a turbulent period of change which this book charts year by year. It sheds light on the vicious power struggles and ideological wars, the birth of new aesthetic credos, and the gradual increase of Party and state control over music, in the opera houses, the concert halls, the workers’ clubs, and on the streets.

Thought arises, not from matter, but from the way it is organised. Lenin’s friend and rival Alexander Bogdanov explored the idea of automating society. The West calls this cybernetics and it fuels consumer culture. But Bogdanov’s philosophy was discredited and suppressed. Novelist Simon Ings asks why the Soviets abandoned their early dreams of automating Man.
