RCS Haven E-Bulletin February 2011 (No. 16)

 Ð—дравствуите!

This is the February 2011 edition of the RCS Haven E-Bulletin. We hope that you had a restful and enjoyable January, particularly if you were celebrating the Orthodox Christmas and New Year.

As ever, this newsletter contains a round-up of recent Russian stories in the news, the latest job vacancies from our website and a preview of Russian events happening across Scotland and the rest of the UK in February.

This month many of our featured events are based on or inspired by traditional Russian folktales, whose vibrant images and stories are the perfect cure for the winter blues!

We hope to see you at some of them.

Meanwhile, here at RCS Haven our language and cultural classes for children and adults will continue in February. We are also able to offer a wide range of other services for our members: a well-stocked book and DVD library, translation and interpretation services from our sister organisation RCS Lingua, and specialist individual legal, financial and employment advice.

For more information about any of these things, email us at [email protected]  or visit our website, www.rcshaven.org.uk. And don’t forget that you can now keep up to date with all the latest news from our centre by following us on Facebook and Twitter as well!

"Three Generations"

RCS Haven continues its tradition of hosting art exhibitions which show works by artists of different generations which are united by the same idea of conservation of the Russian art heritage.

This exposition includes works by the pupils of the art studio and the Russian school of RCS Haven. It's the second exhibition of pupils' works and it shows their progress.

The middle generation is represented by the works of the artists who live in Glasgow but keep their connections with the Russian school of art.

Paintings by Maria Yaroshenko who kept working even at the age of 98 display the art as a way to a long and active life. The third part of the exhibition is dedicated to her memory.

You can have a look at the exposition and purchase the works you like, as well as get more information about the art studio and enrol your child (the first lesson is free).

·                   Wednesday 9th – Sunday 13th February: Children’s Theatre, ‘The Frog Princess’, London

Acclaimed children’s theatre group The Puppet Lab combine storytelling and puppetry in a new show for 3-7 year olds based on a traditional Russian folktale. ‘The Frog Princess’ is about three princes who are ordered by their father to find a bride by firing arrows into the air – they are to marry whoever returns the arrows. The arrows shot by the two elder princes are brought back by beautiful princesses, but the youngest brother’s arrow is found by a frog! The obstacles faced by the frog princess on the path to true love make for a hilarious, but also heart-warming story, told skilfully by two master-puppeteers. ·                     Monday 21st February: Lecture, ‘British Idealists Under the Soviet Regime’ Professor Jim Riordan, London

Part of the lecture programme of the GB-Russia Society. Designed for the education and training of foreign communists, the International Lenin School (1926-38) and later the Higher Party School (1954-86) were shrouded in secrecy. The Soviet government never officially acknowledged their existence and students were even encouraged to use false names! Jim Riordan, at the time a British communist, attended the Higher Party School between 1961 and ‘64, and in this talk he will discuss his experiences and those of other idealistic British students, some of whom went on to become Soviet spies, while others were sent to the camps and in one case even executed by their adopted country.

·                     Wednesday 23rd February: Lecture, ‘Russia’s Radical Youth: The Style of Everyday Life and Politics’ Hilary Pilkington and Ivan Gololobov, London

Part of the ‘Underground Russia – Art, Politics and Style’ lecture series. The last ten years of Russian history are often seen as a time in which the loss of the political freedoms earned during the Yeltsin years was allowed to take place because of widespread voter apathy and lack of involvement in politics. However, in this talk Hilary Pilkington and Ivan Gololobov will argue that this analysis ignores the many different types of ‘informal’ political activity that continue to take place across Russia. In particular, they will consider the often radical (and sometimes deeply disturbing) political aspirations and meaning underlying the dress, behaviour and lifestyles of various youth subcultures, such as skinheads, punks and goths.
