RCS Haven E-Bulletin - February 2018

Greetings, and welcome to our bulletin full of information on exciting Russian events. 

RCS Haven is welcoming anyone who is interested in studying Russian language, literature and culture. We have English and Russian language lessons. There are a library, Art studio for children and Web-design Studio.
Also, the Centre provides consultations in law, finance and other aspects of work and business in Russia and Britain. 

NEWS

Last chance to take exams on the Russian language GCSE and GCE A-level according to the old programme

The deadline for the registration of summer exams for GCSE and GCE A level, is 19Th February.
In the new academic year all pupils will take the exams in line with the new requirements.
On 17Th February a preliminary exam will be held at RCS Haven by the teachers of Russian school, who have experience in preparing pupils to take this exams.

Application for registration after 19Th February will not be accepted. 

The Russian club at the Scottish schools

RCS Haven, together with the Scotland Russian Forum, with the support of Glasgow City Council, continues the project with the involvement of Scottish schoolchildren in studying Russian culture and language.
After the Festive season, the Russian clubs have begun to work in Shawlands Academy (the full block), All Saints RC Secondary (the full block) and Milngavie Primary (the reduced block).
During the classes the students get acquainted with the history and culture of Russia, learn the basics of the language.
Students who have completed the first block will start the second stage of training, where we plan to conduct the training program in accordance with the standards of SQA Russian for Life and for Work.
If you want the school where your child study to join this project, please talk to the teachers. Having received the invitation from Scottish school, we will be glad to conduct trial lessons and make circle of Russian clubs in Glasgow bigger.

In January, the Russian Centre in Scotland Haven participated in an annual meeting of Scottish school children with the representatives of organizations and enterprises interested in maintaining foreign language teaching.
 
Business Brunchces: Language skills in the World of Work’ in Glasgow is carried out by the Scotland’s National Centre for Languages (SCILT) for the purpose of enhancing the motivation of school pupils to study various languages.
 
The pupils eagerly approached the RCS Haven stand, asked questions and attended two trial lessons which were conducted by Natalya Krisanova, a teacher of Russian school at RCS Haven.

 
VACANCIES

 
Police Scotland continues to encourage members of ethnic minorities to apply for the job and once again refers to the Russian-speaking community.

RCS Haven is looking for Russian and Chess teachers for the Saturday school.
Also, we are looking for volunteers.

EDUCATION 

The School of Russian Centre in Scotland  Haven 
Classes for children are based on Russian teaching methods for primary school level native and non-native speakers.
In the current school year, lessons for all classes except the youngest take place between 11.00 and 2.00pm on Saturdays at Adelphi Centre, 12 Commercial Road, Glasgow G5 0PQ. [email protected]

Russian classes for tests and exams 
RCS Haven prepares students for taking tests and exams in the Russian language, and also conducts / organizes tests and exams: Russian for Life and Work Level 3 and level 4 (reg. No: SQA 3014177), and GCSE  Ð¸ GCE A Level in Russian (reg. No: EDEXCEL - 70233).  Classes take place on Saturdays from 12.00. to 13.30 at Adelphi Centre, 12 Commercial Road, Glasgow G5 0PQ. [email protected]

Art lessons for children are undergoing in RCS Haven.
Under supervision of experienced teachers, a professional artist and a specialist in early development, children study the basics of drawing and painting, language development and drama. All children are welcome on Fridays from 5:30pm till 7:30pm.

Until, after witnessing one of their fights, Alyosha disappears, and these estranged parents must find common ground once again. Konstantin Batyushkov (1787-1853) was one of the creators of modern Russian poetry. He was an inspiration for Pushkin, and in the twentieth century. Peter France is a former professor at Edinburgh University and the translator of many Russian poets, most recently Baratynsky and Mandelstam, In his new book, Writings from the Golden Age of Russian Poetry, just published by Columbia University Press, he weaves together Batyushkov’s life with translations of his writings in verse and prose. To launch the book in the UK, Peter France will give a talk on Batyushkov, illustrated by readings in Russian and English and followed by an informal reception. From 19 to 23 February 2018, the Princess Dashkova Russian Centre hosts a series of lectures by scholars from the Higher School of Economics, Moscow. Their visit to the University of Edinburgh takes place under the auspices of the Erasmus+ International Credit Mobility Scheme. All lectures take place at the Dashkova Centre. A mini-season celebrating the work of the award-winning director Andrey Zvyagintsev, with the release of his new film Loveless (2017), which won the Best Film Award at 2017’s BFI London Film Festival. Zvyagintsev will appear onstage for an In Conversation event, as well as taking part in a Q&A following a preview of Loveless and introducing Bergman’s Scenes from a Marriage (1973) which influenced his new film.

Royal Fabergé explores the extraordinary production and glittering saga of Fabergé, the leading artist-jewellers during the decades preceding the First World War. A highlight will be the Sandringham animals illustrating the naturalistic genius of Fabergé which so appealed to Royal tastes both in Britain and in Russia.

The BBC’s McMafia is an international thriller with Russian organised crime at its heart and London as its hub. But how realistic is the portrayal of Russian-managed drug and human trafficking rings all run from offices in the City? The Russian Embassy has hit out at what it calls the show’s cliches, while the author Misha Glenny has defended his portrayal of global crime rings run from the former Soviet space. This SSEES roundtable brings together experts on the place of Russia in both the perpetration and the prosecution of transnational crime to navigate these murky waters. We will look at the long history of stereotypes of the Russian international criminal, and the present-day efforts to suppress organised crime in the region.
