RCS Haven E-Bulletin - July 2014

Greetings, and welcome to our bulletin full of information on exciting Russian events.
RCS Haven is welcoming anyone who is interested in studying Russian language, literature and culture. We have English and Russian language lessons. There are a library, Art studio for children and Web-design Studio.
Also, the Centre provides consultations in law, finance and other aspects of work and business in Russia and Britain.

NEWS

Summer break
 
Please note that the RCS Haven Duke Street office and its Russian school in Adelphi Centre are now closed for its summer break, meaning that during July and August our language and cultural classes and other services for members, such as our book/DVD lending library, will not be running. We will, however, continue to offer specialist translation/legal/financial advice and Russian news and events listings throughout the summer via this newsletter, our website and our Facebook and Twitter pages.
We hope that you have a great summer, and we look forward to seeing you again when our Centre reopens!

 
2014 - 15 school year is the last year when students will be able to sit SQA Russian Higher Exam.
Anyone who may need the SQA Russian Higher qualification either to enter a university or to develop future career plans are very welcome to join our lessons of Russian.
These two-hours-a-week lessons will prepare you for the exam and also build confidence in Russian grammar, creative writing and basics of business language.
Those who are younger than 14 yeas old (the minimum age requirement for SQA Higher Exams)  or whose who are not yet ready for Higher level could consider other qualifications:
Access 2 & 3, Intermediate 1 & 2, Russian Language for Life and Work Award (S3 & S4 levels) - would suit beginners and intermediate English speaking students. 
The classes will commence on August 28, 2014 and will take place every Thursday at 6 - 8pm in the classroom of RCS Haven at 11 Duke St, Glasgow, Glasgow City G4 0UL. More...

Regular events in Scotland

Orthodox Church Services:
The following Scottish churches hold regular/semi-regular Orthodox services (all welcome):
Glasgow: The Parish of St. Kentigern (Russian Orthodox). Services held in Govan Old Church, 866 Govan Road, Glasgow, G51 3UU.
Edinburgh: Orthodox Community of St. Andrew (a mixture of Orthodox faiths. Services held in the Chapel of St. Andrew, 2 Meadow Lane, Edinburgh, EH8 9NR.

Art studio for Children
Art lessons for children are undergoing in RCS Haven.
Under supervision of experienced teachers, a professional artist and a specialist in early development, children study the basics of drawing and painting, language development and drama. All children are welcome on Thursdays from 5pm till 7pm.

The second event in the Pushkin House Russian Book Club series focuses on the work about  the Crimean War that catapulted a young Leo Nikolaevich Tolstoy to authorial fame in 1855.  Led by Dr Rosamund Bartlett and Prof Stephen Lovell, the informal discussion will revolve around both the philosophical themes and the historical background of the series, as well as importance of the novella in the evolution of Tolstoy’s work and thinking.

From Russia with love! The Thistle is a 75 minute musical with an original Russian script
and score. It is a love story for Scotland, set in the middle ages. Beautifully sung and
