RCS Haven E-Bulletin - July 2016

Greetings, and welcome to our bulletin full of information on exciting Russian events.

RCS Haven is welcoming anyone who is interested in studying Russian language, literature and culture. We have English and Russian language lessons. There are a library, Art studio for children and Web-design Studio.
Also, the Centre provides consultations in law, finance and other aspects of work and business in Russia and Britain.

NEWS

 
18-25 September.
The event is realising in order to preserve the spiritual and cultural heritage of Russia abroad through education of the younger generation of compatriots across the world to ensure the continuity of Russian traditions.
 
The program is intended for participants aged from 12 to 17 years and designed in such a way as to ensure maximum involvement of participants in the all actions of the event.
 
Big part of the program will include master classes in acting, plastic education, fine arts. It also provides interactive performances and exhibitions, theatrical tours around St. Petersburg and its museums, meetings with actors of St. Petersburg theaters and famous people of St. Petersburg.
 
Taking into account the age of the young people, the Committee provides escort by the teachers of theatrical art, Russian culture, Russian language and literature from the schools of the partner country during the event.  Series of workshops on cultural education for accompanying are planned.
 
Participants independently acquire a ticket to St. Petersburg and back. Accommodation, catering, cultural and educational programs and necessary expenses will be provided from the budget of the Administration of St. Petersburg.

Orthodox Church Services:
The following Scottish churches hold regular/semi-regular Orthodox services (all welcome):
Glasgow: The Parish of St. Kentigern (Russian Orthodox). Services held in Govan Old Church, 866 Govan Road, Glasgow, G51 3UU.
Edinburgh: Orthodox Community of St. Andrew (a mixture of Orthodox faiths. Services held in the Chapel of St. Andrew, 2 Meadow Lane, Edinburgh, EH8 9NR.

Art studio for Children
Art lessons for children are undergoing in RCS Haven.
Under supervision of experienced teachers, a professional artist and a specialist in early development, children study the basics of drawing and painting, language development and drama. All children are welcome on Fridays from 5:30pm till 7:30pm.

The Moscow State Circus returns to the UK with its latest and greatest production to date. 'Zhelaniy' is based on the Russian folklore story of Cvetik-Semicvetik, or "the flower with seven colors", by Benjamin Losin, where each of the petals represent a wish and is the perfect back drop for what is undoubtedly the greatest and most famous circus on earth.

27 May – 11 September
With their perfect synthesis of typography, design and illustration, Soviet children’s books in the 1920s and 1930s revolutionised the picture book form against a turbulent political backdrop. Subjects ranged from folk tales and contemporary children's verse to books on the modern world and Soviet education. The exhibition will explore this period of unprecedented innovation, from the pre-revolutionary 'Silver Age' of Russian illustration to the pioneers of Soviet children's publishing.

London based Russian alto saxophonist and composer Zhenya Strigalev is one of the rising stars of the European jazz scene and he is fast building a reputation on both sides of the Atlantic for his exhilarating take on contemporary jazz. Trio featuring the extraordinary US bassist Michael Janisch (Joe Lovano, Miguel Zenon, Gary Husband) and first-call Spanish drummer Marc Ayza (Jason Linder, Greg Osby) to blend the lines between jazz, funk, rock, electronica and improv in a genre mish-mash of high calibre interplay and raw emotion.

An impressive technique and an impulsive romantic expression, which have been a hallmark of so many Russian pianists including Rachmaninov and Horovitz'- Fanfare
(USA).  London-based Russian pianist Konstantin Lapshin, a prize-winner in more than 15 national and international competitions, is currently pursuing a doctoral degree at the Royal College of Music.

Hamlet (Russian: Гамлет, tr. Gamlet) is a 1964 film adaptation in Russian of William Shakespeare's play of the same title, based on a translation by Boris Pasternak. It was directed by Grigori Kozintsev and Iosif Shapiro, and stars Innokenty Smoktunovsky as Prince Hamlet.

Join us for a talk with Joseph Backstein, one of the leading curators in Russia over the last 30 years, and former Commissioner of the Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art. Joseph will talk about curating in Russia and how this role has changed since he began. He will also talk about the history, development and significance of the Biennale over the last 12 years, its important role as a reflector of the global contemporary art scene as well as its great impact within Russia and Internationally.

After massive sold-out shows in Moscow and Saint Petersburg, followed by the highly successful Takeover 2016 tour across Russia and Belarus, Oxxxymiron is now coming to play European venues for the first time. This summer one of the most popular and critically acclaimed Russian hip-hop artists, who spent most of his life in Germany and Britain, is going on a long-awaited month-long European tour fittingly titled "Back to Europe".
