RCS Haven E-Bulletin June 2011 (No. 20)

Здравствуите!

Welcome to the June 2011 edition of the RCS Haven E-Bulletin. This month the summer festival season kicks off in style with the West End Festival in Glasgow, and the world-famous Edinburgh International Film Festival. We have previewed selected Russian-themed events at both of these festivals in the events listings section below, along with some of the most exciting Russian plays, concerts, exhibitions and lectures taking place across Scotland and the rest of the UK in June. As usual, the rest of the E-Bulletin contains a round-up of important Russian stories in the news this month and some of the latest job vacancies from our website, www.rcshaven.org.uk.
Here at RCS Haven in Glasgow, we are getting ready for our summer break, but our programme of language and cultural classes and other services for members (book/DVD library, translation/interpretation service, specialist legal/financial/employment advice) will continue into June. We would also like to remind you that you can still help to save the Slavonic languages departments at the University of Glasgow, which have been threatened with closure. The University Court will make its final judgment on the proposed cuts later this month, but there is still time for you to register your opposition by signing the following online petition (set up by department staff):
We will of course provide a full report on the University’s decision and the outcome of the ‘Save Slavonic Languages’ campaign in next month’s E-Bulletin.

Wishing you a happy and (hopefully!) sunny June,
All the staff and volunteers at RCS Haven

P.S. And don’t forget to keep up to date with all the latest news from our centre by following us on Facebook and Twitter!

·                     Saturday 7th May – Saturday 4th June: Exhibition, Janet Quintrell Treloar ‘Russia’s Cities: War and Poetry’
Janet Quintrell Treloar is a painter originally from West Cornwall in England, and who is currently vice-president of the Royal Watercolour Society. The SRI is hosting an exhibition of some examples of her recent work, which can be grouped in to two broad themes – the wartime heroism of the Russian people and the life and work of the great Russian poet Anna Akhmatova. The paintings were inspired by the artist’s visits to three Soviet ‘hero cities’ - Moscow, St. Petersburg and Volgograd, and they chart her attempts to record the lasting impressions left by the war on the cities’ landscapes and populations. Whilst in St. Petersburg she also sought out Anna Akhmatova’s former home and created a series of paintings of the building, its interiors, and of other significant locations from Akhmatova’s life and poetry throughout the city. Previously, the exhibition has been displayed at the Russian Embassy and Pushkin House in London, and at the Galitzin Library in St. Petersburg.

·                     Saturday 11th June – Saturday 9th July: Exhibtion, ‘Andrei D Sakharov: Alarm & Hope’
Andrei Sakharov was a leading physicist in the USSR of the 1940s and ‘50s, who was known as the ‘father of the hydrogen bomb’. However, in later life he became a champion of human rights and advocate of political freedom behind the Iron Curtain, and one of the most internationally-famous opponents of Soviet power. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1975, and his principled messages contributed to the non-violent revolutions that swept Eastern Europe between 1898 and ’91. ‘Alarm & Hope’ is an itinerant exhibition put together in 2009 by the Council of Europe, the Andrei Sakharov Museum and the Russian human rights association Memorial to honour Sakharov and his legacy - it is composed of photos and quotations from Sakharov’s numerous letters and articles, which continue to inform and inspire campaigners for justice and freedom even today.

The Rest of Scotland:
·                     Wednesday 2nd February – Thursday 30th June: Exhibition, ‘Gomel: A Belarusian Town at War’, Aberdeen
In 2010, Aberdeen and the Belarusian town of Gomel celebrated two decades of being twinned. Today, Gomel is a thriving, bustling city, but during the Second World War the city was devastated, both by fighting and by a brutal Nazi occupation that lasted from 1941 to ’43. This exhibition commemorates these dark years in the city’s history and contains a selection of unique items on loan from the Gomel Museum of Military Glory, as well as contemporary Red Army uniforms, equipment and weapons. When viewing these objects visitors are forced to consider the great sacrifice of the Belarusian people in the war (one third of the country’s population died in WWII), alongside recurring themes of resistance, the Holocaust and the role of women during the conflict.

·                     Monday 23rd May – Saturday 11th June: Theatre, ‘Anna Karenina’, Dundee
The Dundee Repertory Ensemble presents Jo Clifford’s adaptation of Tolstoy’s epic novel ‘Anna Karenina’ – a tragic tale of love, duty, sex, marriage and moral regeneration, set against the background of a rapidly changing Imperial Russia. The plot centres around the lives and choices of two very different characters – Anna, a respectable and well-to-do wife and mother, but one who feels utterly trapped by the cold and passionless life she is forced to lead as a member of polite society; and Levin, who has turned his back on the aristocracy and moved to the countryside, to live among the peasants and search for simpler, kinder and more honest way of living. This production also features set- and costume-designs from the award-winning team of Jemima Levick and Alex Lowde, who have promised to create a visually-stunning backdrop that will be the equal of the rich drama occurring on stage.

·                     Thursday 2nd – Saturday 4th June: Theatre, ‘The King of Scotland’, Irvine/Greenock/Dunfermline
Glasgow playwright Iain Heggie’s ‘The King of Scotland’ is based on Nikolai Gogol’s short-story ‘Diary of a Madman’, a scathing satire of petty officialdom and political bureaucracy in Russia during the reign of Nicholas I, but with the action transplanted to modern Scotland. The plot centres on Tommy McMillan, unemployed for 28 years before being forced onto a government training scheme. As a result of the scheme, Tommy gets a job with the ‘Department for Upward Mobility’ and a chance to escape from his old life, but none of his new colleagues realise just how far up the ladder he intends to climb... ‘The King of Scotland’ was first performed at the Edinburgh Festival in 2000, where it won a ‘Fringe First’ award and was described by reviewers as ‘electrifyingly written’ and ‘brutally funny’, but it has been fully updated for this tour to reflect Scottish politics after a decade of devolution.

The Rest of the UK:
·                     Tuesday 10th May – Thursday 28th July: Theatre, ‘The Cherry Orchard’, London
The latest production at London’s legendary National Theatre is Australian playwright Andrew Upton’s adaptation of ‘The Cherry Orchard’, Chekhov’s poignant, tragi-comic account of the decline of the Russian ruling classes at the turn of the twentieth-century. Zoe Wanamaker stars as the glamorous dowager Ranyevskaya, who returns from Paris to her family estate in the Russian provinces just as it, and her beloved cherry orchard, are about to meet the developer’s axe. Her daughters and the rest of her extended family living on the estate all seem more inclined to luxuriate in memories of the past than act to secure their future, but then peasant-entrepreneur Lopakhin appears and proposes a clever scheme to save the estate, but at a price... This play is part of the National Theatre ongoing ‘NT Live!’ initiative, meaning that certain performances will also be screened live in cinemas across the UK during June 2011.

·                     Thursday 19th May – Thursday 30th June: Cinema, BFI presents ‘Kino: Russian Film Pioneers’, London
To celebrate the release of the restored and uncensored original version of Sergei Eisenstein’s revolutionary 1925 film ‘Battleship Potemkin’ in cinemas across the UK at the end of April, the British Film Institute are screening a series of films by other pioneering Russian directors of the 1920s, ‘30s and ‘40s at their centre on London’s South Bank. Filmmakers such as Eisenstein, Dziga Vertov, Abram Room and Alexander Dovzhenko not only created breathtaking new visual languages and styles of storytelling, their work also dealt with political, social and sexual themes in a bold, open way that contrasts deeply with the heavily-censored Western cinema of the same era. The films on show as part of the ‘Kino: Russian Film Pioneers’ season range from populist historical epics like ‘Chapaev’ and ‘Ivan the Terrible’ (the blockbusters of their day), to dizzying, experimental documentary works such as Vertov’s 1929 ‘Man with a Movie Camera’, but they all share a freshness, originality and creativity that can still be felt today.

·                     Monday 6th June: Lecture, Dr James Muckle ‘Who, When, Where and How? Teachers and Learners of Russian in Britain Past, Present and Future’, London
Part of the lecture programme of the GB-Russia Society. During his long career Dr James Muckle has taught the Russian language in schools, universities and as a teacher-trainer, and served for a long time as Chairman of the Association of Teachers of Russian. In this lecture he will be discussing the study of Russian in Britain, the history of which stretches back almost a thousand years, although it was not until the late-nineteenth century that the language became properly established in British society. Even then, the organisations that first brought Russian to a wider audience were not schools and universities as one might expect, but rather the military and leading business establishments. The last century has seen many ups and downs in the fortunes of Russian as a subject of study in the UK (not always as the result of the changing state of relations between the two countries) and Dr Muckle will consider these, as well as assessing the current situation and making some predictions about the future of Russian language learning and teaching on these shores.

·                     Wednesday 8th – Saturday 11th June: Theatre, ‘Three Sisters’ (Russian-language), Nottingham
Part of the Chekhov International Festival. Cheek by Jowl Theatre Company was formed by Declan Donnellan and Nick Ormerod in 1981, and quickly became famous for its innovative interpretation of classic texts. In 1999, however, Donnellan and Ormerod were commissioned by the Chekhov International Theatre in Moscow to form a Russian-language ensemble, and in the ensuing decade this ‘sister-company’ has won many awards of its own and performed all over the world, usually to largely non-Russian-speaking audiences. In fact, the company’s artistic directors insist that watching a play that isn’t being performed in the audience’s native language can be an extremely liberating experience both for actors and spectators, who are free to become totally immersed in the world on stage. For their latest production, Cheek by Jowl (Russia) have taken on Chekhov’s sweeping love story ‘Three Sisters’, the tale of Olga, Irina and Masha, whose lives are turned upside-down by the arrival of glamorous officer Veshinin in their remote town. (In Russian, with English surtitles.)

·                     Tuesday 14th June: Lecture, Anton Popov ‘Reinventing History: Becoming a Cossack in the 21st Century’, London
Part of the ‘Underground Russia: Art, Politics and Style’ lecture series. In the aftermath of the collapse of the USSR in 1991, Russians embarked upon the difficult task of revising their understanding of their country’s history and ridding it of Marxist-Leninist dogma. One result of this process has been the rise of the so-called ‘new nationalisms’ – the proud rediscovery by many of Russia’s ethnic and national minorities of their own unique history and identity. In this lecture Anton Popov of the University of Warwick will using the example of the Cossack peoples of southern Russia to discuss the social and political roots of the ‘new nationalisms’, and to question both the authenticity of these new ethnic and cultural identities and the role of political institutions in formulating them.

·                     Wednesday 22nd June: Lecture, Professor Sheila Fitzpatrick ‘Stalin and the World of Culture’, London
Part of the lecture programme of the GB-Russia Society. This talk focuses on the complex and multifaceted relationship that existed between Stalinist political leaders and the Soviet intelligentsia between the 1930s and ‘50s. On the one hand, Stalin and his acolytes both could and did wield great power over the lives and careers of Russian writers and artists; but, equally, many of them were from working-class backgrounds and felt intimidated by the intelligence and sophistication of the cultural elite. This duality led to many Bolshevik politicians of the 1930s to set up their own networks of patronage and influence among the cultural elite – such relationships were awkward, tense and often dangerous, but could also be hugely beneficial for both sides. Sheila Fitzpatrick is a Professor in Modern Russian History at the University of Chicago, and is a leading scholar on several subjects relating to Tsarist and Soviet Russia.
