News
Thanks to an initiative by Jenny Carr, organiser of The Scotland-Russia Forum, with support of Glasgow City Council and in cooperation with Russian centre Haven, the first-in-Scotland Russian Club opened its doors for secondary school students in Shawlands Academy on the 23rd of May. The purpose of the Club is to promote Russian culture and language. It is achieved through adventurous educational journeys and creative projects. We visit theatres, communicate with peers from Glasgow’s twin-city Rostov, we “launched” the club travel agency “Golden tours” and do virtual tours to Russia – this is how we learn language and contemporary Russian culture and this is just the beginning. We are planning dozens of other exciting events from film shooting to travel to Russia.
Teachers from the Russian School at Russian centre Haven are organising the classes.
Dear parents of children of 11-15 years old, we welcome your Russian speaking kids to our Club. This is a tremendous way to make new friends, exchange language skills and have a great time.
Please note that the language classes in Russian Centre in Scotland Haven and its Russian school will be closed after 23rd June.
Our Russian and English language classes for adults will resume after the summer break on Monday 3rd September.
Russian school for children in Glasgow reopens on 25th August. The school’s lessons will take place on Saturdays, at The Adelphi Centre, 12 Commercial Road, Glasgow, G5 0PQ. (Map)
Children may be enrolled in the school by telephone, on 0141 552 2144 or by e-mail at: [email protected]
Wishing you a happy and (hopefully!) sunny June

Following the death of his close friend, Victor Hartmann in 1873, Musorsgky attended an exhibition of his work and was inspired to compose a piano suite depicting some of the paintings, drawings and designs that he had seen there. The suite became a potent example of his Russian nationalist sentiments and his desire to ‘realistically’ capture pictorial ideas in music. It cried out to be arranged for orchestra, and one who took up the challenge was Ravel, who made his remarkable orchestration in 1922. Ravel’s spectacular scoring of Musorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition comes in Stephen Johnson’s focus, and the BBC SSO gives a complete performance.
