  The Russian Ice Stars return to Glasgow with what promises to be another breathtaking spectacle. ‘Evolution’ uses thrilling music, costumes and acrobatics to bring to life the story of the Earth, starting with the creation of our planet and the evolution of mankind, before going on to imagine what feats technology will allow us to achieve in the future.

·         Saturday 16^th October: Concert, RSNO 10:11 Season, ‘John Lill plays Tchaikovsky’

  This concert is not to be missed: see Tchaikovsky’s blockbuster Piano Concerto, with the legendary pianist John Lill at the keyboard. Concert-goers will also be treated to renditions of Dvorák’s Fifth Symphony and Beethoven’s Coriolan Overture. For whose who are interested there will also be a pre-concert talk about the evening’s music, free to all ticket holders, by the RSNO’s Peter Hunt, which will start at 6.45pm.

  Poorboy Theatre Company’s latest production is almost impossible to describe – ‘Blood &Roses’ is part interactive walking tour, part installation art project and part spellbinding theatre. Participants begin at the Tron Theatre, where they be given an MP3 player that will guide them between art works in found spaces across the city, whilst telling a dramatic story about love, loyalty and conflict between two families, one Scottish and the other Russian.

·         Saturday 11^th September – Saturday 30^th October: Exhibition, Elizabeth Warner ‘The Russian Village through British Eyes: Photographs of Rural North Russia, 2004-2009’

 Professor Elizabeth Warner has spent the last fifteen years documenting the traditional way of life of rural communities in Vologda and Arkhangelsk provinces, a rich culture that is rapidly disappearing under the weight of economic and social change. Her photographs depict scenes from both everyday life and the region’s unique religious festivals, which combine Christian and pagan rituals. Professor Warner will also be presenting a talk about the exhibition and her experiences in Northern Russia on Friday 17^th September (see below for further details)

·         Saturday 9^th October – Friday 22^nd October: Exhibition, Berglind ‘Luv Etc’

  This exhibition showcases the fruits of an ambitious project by Edinburgh-based artist Berglind, in which he has attempted to combine to iconic style and visual trademarks of Soviet poster art with modern Western advertising’s obsessions with sex and consumerism. The resulting 20 paintings are striking and original.

·         Friday 15^th October: Conference, ‘University of Edinburgh Russian Studies Postgraduate Conference’

  The School of History, Classics and Archaeology and the School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures at the University of Edinburgh have organised this one-day conference to explore how ideology has been used in Russia throughout the country’s history. Papers will be given in four broad areas: Ideology and Literature, Ideology and the People, Ideology in the Post-Soviet Space and Ideology Abroad. The conference will be held at the newly-opened Princess Dashkova Centre for Russian Studies.

·         Friday 15^th October: Talk, Robert Chandler ‘Vasily Grossman: Journalist, Witness, Artist’

  Talk to coincide with the publication of ‘The Road’, a new collection of Grossman’s short stories and articles. As a journalist attached to the Red Army, writer Vasily Grossman reported on some of the pivotal moments of World War II – the battles of Stalingrad and Kursk, the fall of Berlin, the liberation of the Treblinka concentration camp. Robert Chandler will argue that Grossman was not simply a witness, and that his dispatches from the Front marked him out as a great artist long before the writing of his critically acclaimed novels, which include the epic ‘Life and Fate’ (loosely based on his experiences at Stalingrad).

·         Sunday 24^th October: Concert, Вокал-ансамбль «Воскресение» ('Resurrection' singing group), Culzean Castle

  The «Воскресение» choir is made up of just 9 singers, but all of them have been trained at the Conservatory in St. Petersburg and over the last few years they have toured extensively across Europe. Last year, on a trip to the beautiful Culzean Castle they performed an impromptu concert for other visitors, and if that was anything to go by their official return is not to be missed! Their repertoire is based around traditional Russian music, both sacred and popular, and they are directed by Jurij Maruk.

·         Wednesday 29^th September – Tuesday 19^th October: Exhibition, Olga Pluzhnikova-Orlova ‘Inside/Outside: The Famous Moleskines’, London

  An exhibition of old favourites and new pieces from Russian artist Olga Pluzhnikova-Orlova’s continuing ‘Inside/Outside’ series of paintings. The artist’s notebooks (the ‘Moleskines’ of the exhibition title) will also be on display, and are filled with a huge variety of ‘wonderful graphic works’. Olga Pluzhnikova-Orlova is a member of the Moscow Union of Artists, and her work been exhibited more than 50 times in Russia and around the world.

·         Tuesday 19^th October: Business Seminar, ‘Energy and Maritime Opportunities in Russia’, London

  An all-day seminar jointly organised by the RBCC, UK Trade and Investment (UKTI) and the Energy Industries Council (EIC) There are opportunities in the Russia market in a huge range of energy-related areas – power generation, shipbuilding, offshore platform construction, and of course oil, gas and other petrochemicals. Other European countries are taking advantage of this, but as a whole, UK businesses are not – in this seminar British businesses can learn about what opportunities are available in Russia, and hear about the experiences of companies that already do business there. At the end of the day there will also be the chance to have one-to-one meetings with the speakers and to network with other attendees.

·         Thursday 21^st – Thursday 28^th October: Exhibition, ‘Mikhail Lomonosov, 300 Year Anniversary’, London

  Pushkin House presents an exhibition of original documents and artefacts belonging to the great Russian scientist and polymath Mikhail Lomonosov, to celebrate the three-hundredth anniversary of his birth. In the eighteenth century Lomonosov made a huge contribution to the sum of human knowledge in fields as diverse as literature, education and science – he discovered the atmosphere of Venus, predicted the existence of the Antarctic landmass and created the basis of the modern Russian literary language. All items in the exhibition are on loan from the Lomonosov museum in St. Petersburg.

·         Friday 22^nd – Friday 29^th October: Exhibition, Leonty Usov ‘The Cherry Orchard’, London

  Russian artist Leonty Usov has made a career out of carving beautiful, abstract portraits of famous Russian writers – from Pushkin to Pasternak - out of the golden wood of Siberian pine trees. This exhibition showcases 12 such sculpture-portraits of Anton Chekhov, which were originally made in 1998, to commemorate the 150^th anniversary of the doctor, writer and playwright’s birth.

Academia Rossica is proud to present its fourth annual Russian film festival. The official programme for the festival has yet to be released, but viewers are promised new and award-winning Russian films, documentaries and animations, as well as the chance to take part in Q&As with directors and actors from some of the films on show.

Nobel Prize for Physics won by Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov

Two University of Manchester scientists, Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov, have won the Nobel Prize for Physics in recognition of their "groundbreaking experiments" with graphene, a two dimensional material.

 

Russian Orthodox Church to Launch Its Own Site on YouTube

The Russian Orthodox Church will open its own site at popular YouTube video hosting service, Interfax-Religion reports. The project presentation will be held October 11 in the conference hall of the Christ the Savior Cathedral during the international festival of Orthodox media "Faith and Word", the Synodal Information Department reported to Interfax-Religion Thursday.

 

Students could face huge fees hike‎

Students could be forced to pay five times as much for their university education if the cap on fees is lifted, research suggests.

An analysis of fees paid by international students reveals home students are likely to face a massive hike in costs if institutions are allowed to set their own course fees.

 

Russia's Answer to Harvard Business School - A Break With Traditions ...

SKOLKOVO, RUSSIA — A business school created by Russia’s leading oligarchs presented diplomas to its first graduates and inaugurated a $250 million high-tech campus complex in a suburb of Moscow last month, seeking to stake out a role as the Harvard Business School equivalent for students focused on the so-called BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India and China).

 

Schwarzenegger brings Californian investors to Russia

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger will lead a delegation of U.S. venture capitalists from Silicon Valley to Russia on October 10, Russia's hi-tech government corporation Rosnano said.

 

A Strong Europe and Russia

The image of Russia in Europe is often not very flattering and not very fair. In Germany, we have an old saying that goes like this: “When Russia seems strong, it is not as strong as it seems. When Russia seems weak, it is not as weak as it seems.” My impression is that at present we should pay attention to the second half of this saying.

 

BP new boss in talks with Russian partner over £3bn assets' sale to pay Gulf bill

The move marks a U-turn for new BP chief executive Robert Dudley, who as a director of TNK-BP fell out dramatically with his Russian counterparts in 2008 because he opposed their international ambitions. But with the cost of the Deepwater Horizon spill still mounting, Dudley needs to raise cash to reassure investors that the oil company can weather the storm.

Dmitry Medvedev's stereo system has Russia's bloggers buzzing

Forget the sacking of Moscow's mayor or Russia's chances of beating England to host the 2018 world cup. Russia's blogosphere was today buzzing with a discussion of president Dmitry Medvedev's state-of-the-art stereo system.

 

England are 'easy option' and Fifa should gamble on us

Russia's 2018 World Cup bid is moving into overdrive amid fears that England may be sneaking ahead in the final few weeks of campaigning to host the tournament.
