Events in Glasgow

Sat 6 Oct 7:30pm
Time to celebrate! Glinka’s Overture to Russlan and Ludmilla has been called a musical firecracker – so what better way to launch Peter Oundjian’s very first concert as RSNO Music Director? That is just the start of this thrilling all-Russian program, which sweeps from the heart-melting song of Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto – played by the superb Vadim Gluzman – to the revolutionary fervor of Shostakovich’s mighty Eleventh Symphony. Be there, as we raise a glass to a very special night for Scottish music.
Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, 2 Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow, G2 3NY.  t:  0141 353 8000

Thu 11 Oct 7:30pm
As a former music director of Moscow’s Bolshoi Theatre, Alexander Vedernikov’s credentials in Russian repertoire hardly need stating. So expect a special level of emotional commitment in Tchaikovsky’s Pathétique Symphony. And expect an unmistakably eastern-European angle on the two masterpieces that open Muzyka Polska, our celebration of the music of Poland. Chopin’s First Concerto is an established favorite, though surely no soloist could bring more freshness and poetry to it than Angela Hewitt. Szymanowski’s early Concert Overture, meanwhile, is a rarity in the concert hall – though you will wonder why, when you hear this sumptuous homage to Richard Strauss from a composer dizzy with his own youthful genius.
City Halls, Candleriggs, Glasgow, G1 1NQ , t: 0141 353 8000

Tue 23 - Fri 26 Oct 7:30pm
A comedy by Anton Chekov in a version by Scottish playwright Stuart Paterson, brought to you by award winning director Liz Carruthers.
The Cherry Orchard by Anton Chekov The play concerns an aristocratic Russian woman and her family as they return to the family's estate (which includes a large and well-known cherry orchard) just before it is auctioned to pay the mortgage. While presented with options to save the estate, the family essentially does nothing and the play ends with the estate being sold to the son of a former serf, and the family leaving to the sound of the cherry orchard being cut down. The story presents themes of cultural futility — both the futility of the aristocracy to maintain its status and the futility of the bourgeoisie to find meaning in its newfound materialism. In reflecting the socio-economic forces at work in Russia at the turn of the 20th century, including the rise of the middle classafter the abolition of serfdom in the mid-19th century and the sinking of the aristocracy, the play reflects forces at work around the globe in that period. Rekindle Theatre are a collective of professional actors who believe in creating the highest quality work that pushes artistic boundaries.

The Battle of Borodino was the bloodiest of all the battles in the Napoleonic Wars, and in hindsight it can be seen as a turning point; Napoleon had the advantage of numbers, but he refused to commit all his troops and the result was a massive stalemate that ultimately gave the Russian army enough of a breathing space to force the French back. A detailed model diorama of the battle has been constructed by Gerry West, and is on show in the Scotland-Russia Institute into November.

Sat 29 Sep – Sat 3 Nov
Inspired by Bilibin’s photographs and sketches 100 years previously Richard Davies travelled to the Russian North in 2002 to find out which churches had survived. Further trips have followed every year. Many churches have been lost: some have been left to rot; some have been destroyed by lightning; countless others by ignorance, spite and neglect. Last year, one church was hit by a reversing tractor - it tumbled like a pack of cards.
His book Wooden Churches - Travelling in the Russian North (Richard Davies, Matilda Moreton, White Sea Publishing,December 2011) will be reviewed in the December 2012 issue of SRF Review

Birmingham Royal Ballet presents Tchaikovsky's romantic tragedy. The story is based on a Russian folk tale and German legend in which the beautiful princess Odette is turned into a swan due to being cursed by an evil sorcerer. Swan Lake has become one of the most popular and well known ballets of all time. Choreographed by Peter Wright, Lev Ivanov and Marius Petipa. Set designer Philip Prowse sets the story against black and gold scenery. The setting captures the essence of the fairytale world in which the production is set, including the enchanted forest and the moonlit lake. The ballet tells the story of good and evil and the true power of love.
