Events in Edinburgh and the rest of Scotland

11 September, 18:00
A talk by David MacFadyen, professor in the Depts of Comparative Literature and Musicology, University of California, Los Angeles, and editor of the Far from Moscow music website. Russians spend more time online than any people, worldwide. One of the reasons is that popular social networks allow for the free – often illegal – exchange of music, movies, and games. This has produced an incredibly vibrant music scene, yet it operates below the radar of state-run television. What do those scenes sound like? Where are they based? What ideas drive countless amateurs from Poland to the Pacific? Professor David MacFadyen will offer a quick guide to the Russian web, in terms of song and music. This is an opportunity to understand a culturally vital, yet complex realm of activity – one that’s becoming increasingly important as TV audiences grow older, and entertainment moves online.
