RCS Haven E-Bulletin
September 2010 (No. 11)

Welcome to another edition of the RCS Haven E-Bulletin. We are pleased to announce that after the summer break our centre on Duke Street is once again open for business, and that our language/cultural classes will restart as follows:

Our School for Children is designed to help preserve Russian language and culture among the children of Russian parents living in Scotland. In the new school year, lessons for both junior and senior classes will take place between 12.00 and 2.00pm on Saturdays, at The Adelphi Centre, 12 Commercial Road, Glasgow, G5 0PQ. (Map) This modern community centre has provided us both with classrooms for teaching and a comfortable place for parents to wait while the lessons are in progress. Children may be enrolled in the group by telephone, on either 0141 552 2144 or 07551 378314.

The Russian-language newspaper Англия has recently published an article about the School for Children, which went in to much greater detail about the School’s programme and its achievements to date. The article read as follows:

If you are interested in attending any of our other Russian or English language lessons, please visit our website, for further information and to register your interest. The website is also home to our unique job search facility, online library/DVD catalogue, and links to specialist help and advice covering all aspects of life in Britain, from immigration issues to education, work and personal finance.

As usual, the rest of this E-Bulletin will provide a round-up of Russian stories in the news this month, and of Russian events occurring across Scotland in September. We hope that you enjoy it and look forward to seeing you again soon!

Alexey A. Gromyko. Civilizations and Russia: Ongoing Discussions

Discussions about civilizational nature of Russia root deeply in history. They are a story of many chapters telling about various stages in the life of the country. These discussions are of the same importance as reflections on its political, social or economic conditions. The consciousness determines the being of men not less than the being determines consciousness. Attitudes of other nations to Russia are as important for its progress as GDP, inflation or any other indicator of that kind. Civilizational identity of a man, which may be primarily seen as lofty and abstract matter, has in fact a real implication for personal outlook, values, lifestyle and an attitude to other nations, and vice versa.
