  Hello, and welcome to the RCS Haven E-Bulletin for November 2010. We are constantly looking to expand the ways in which we can offer help and assistance to our members, and we would like to let you know about an exciting new service, RCS Lingua, which will be up and running from early November:

RCS Lingua is a comprehensive translation and interpretation service, designed for use by individuals and companies of all sizes. Our language specialists can translate any document, including letters and application forms, user guides and manuals, contracts and technical or academic publications. They can also provide interpretation services both face-to-face and over the telephone, and help with the composition, editing and proof-reading of original letters and documents. Other features also include an express service and the facility to have translations officially verified by a notary public.   We are also pleased to announce that our weekend English classes are restarting and will be held in our Duke Street Centre between 4.30 and 5.30pm on Saturdays, from 23rd October onwards. These lessons are FREE for RCS Haven members, and there is no booking required. Russian Prime Minister Congratulates Participants and Guests of IV Russkiy Mir Assembly

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin sent a congratulatory message to the participants and guests of the Russkiy Mir Assembly. The message was read just ahead of the podium discussion on The Meaning and Values of Russkiy Mir by Minister of Education and Science Andrei Fursenko.

Vyacheslav Nikonov Highlights the Main Events in the Life of Russkiy Mir in 2010

In his remarks at the opening ceremony of the Russkiy Mir Assembly, the Foundation’s Executive Director Vyacheslav Nikonov summarized the organization’s work and achievements. China agrees to safeguard Scotch against pale imitation

A DEAL giving new protection to Scotch whisky to safeguard it from imitation foreign spirits will be confirmed on Monday. UNESCO Awards Russian Scientist

Russia’s Nobel-prize winning physicist Zhores Alferov has been awarded UNESCO’s medal for contribution to nanotechnology and nanoscience, Voice of Russia reports. Established in March this year, the medal will be given the famed Russian scientist during a ceremony at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris.

Drinking Cup for $500000, Faberge Wedding Boost Sotheby's Russian Sale

A Soviet realist painting depicting two female workers raising a red flag over Moscow fetched $1.5 million at Sotheby’s in New York today.  Painted in 1950 by Yuri Pimenov, the optimistic 8.4-foot- tall canvas “First of May Celebration” led the $14.4 million sale of Russian art and Faberge objects.

Russkiy Mir Foundation Announce First in Space Campaign

Today at the Russkiy Mir Assembly in Moscow, the Foundation announced the start of a new public awareness camapign “First in Space”. On April 12, 1961, one of the greatest milestones in the history of mankind was achieved: the spaceship Vostok launched the first manned flight into space. This event became a symbol of a dream come true, a triumph of science, determination and unprecedented personal courage. The world celebrated the return of a hero, the return of our compatriot Yuri Gagarin. And he continues to live on in our memories.

Russia ranked 65th in UN Human Development

The United Nations ranked Russia 65th in its annual flagship report on comprehensive human development, which was published on Thursday. Norway is leading in the UN rating, followed by Australia and New Zealand.

Nasa plan Hundred Year Starship - the mission that will take astronauts to Mars and leave them there forever

The mission is to boldly go where no man has gone before – on a flight to Mars. The snag is that you’d never come back. The U.S. space agency Nasa is actively investigating the possibility of humans colonising other worlds such as the Red Planet in an ambitious project named the Hundred Years Starship. Forbes rates Putin world's 4th most powerful person

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has been named the fourth most powerful person in the world by Forbes magazine.  The World's Most Powerful People in 2010 was released on Wednesday with the Russian leader was eclipsed only by Chinese President Hu Jintao, his U.S. counterpart Barack Obama, and Saudi King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz.

 The Lung Ha Theatre group present ‘Chekhov Shorts’ – two new plays by Carol Rocamora, based on short stories by Anton Chekhov. In ‘The Two Volodyas’ a young woman finds herself caught been two men, both called Volodya – her rich, elderly husband and her childhood sweetheart; and, in ‘Romance with a Double Bass’, a young musician on his way to a royal engagement finds that his journey takes a turn for the farcical when he falls in love and loses his double bass! Lung Ha Theatre company provides opportunities for young people with learning difficulties to become involved in the performing arts.

  ‘The Russian Play’ is a new work by acclaimed Canadian playwright Hannah Moskvitch, and directed by Rebecca Benson. The play is set in Stalin’s Russia, and tells the story of a tragic romance between a flower shop girl and a gravedigger. Weather permitting, the play will also be performed outside in the Ramshorn graveyard.

International Research Workshop, Rural Realities in the Post-Socialist Space: Understanding Social, Cultural  and Political Change in the Russian and Eastern European Countryside

  The University of Glasgow have convened this conference to allow researchers engaged in small-scale localised studies of Eastern European rural life to come together and discuss social, cultural and political change and development across the region in the twenty years since the fall of communism. Talk, Martin Dewhurst, Recent Changes in the Russian Penal System

  Martin Dewhurst is an honorary research fellow at the University of Glasgow and is the only non-Russian member of a small charitable organisation working to improve living conditions for prisoners in the Urals. In this role he has visited prisons, remand centres and penal colonies across Russia, and at this lecture he will talk about what he saw there as well as the recent attempts by the Russian government to finally move the country’s penal system on from the era of the gulag.   Tatiana Andreeva is an artist from Sergiev-Posad who has been painting matryoshki (Russian dolls) for 21 years. At this event she will give viewers a demonstration of her skills, and, furthermore, a selection of her dolls will be exhibited at the Scotland Russia Institute until 23rd December.

  In the early years of the twentieth century, the Ballet Russes, led by its artistic director Sergei Diaghilev, revolutionised the world of dance. Their bold, uncompromising performances shocked audiences, but also reflected the social and cultural turmoil that was pushing Russia and Europe ever closer to war and revolution. This exhibition showcases over 300 objects from the Ballet Russes archives, including original theatre cloths, props, costumes and posters, as well as items that reveal the lasting influence of their pioneering style on modern art, design and fashion.

The Fourth Russian Film Festival, London

  Academia Rossica is proud to present its fourth annual Russian film festival. As in previous years the main programme consists of the ten best Russian films of the last year, which in 2010 include:

One War (Vera Glagoleva), a controversial and moving re-examination of crime and punishment during the Second World War

The Truce (Svetlana Proscurina), an unsettling and darkly humorous portrayal of provincial Russian life

Gastarbeiter (Yusup Razykov), about a group of workers in Central Asia.

  Viewers are also promised high-quality documentaries and animations, as well as the chance to take part in Q&As with directors and actors from some of the films on show.

Exhibition, Nikolai Dvigubsky in Pictures, London

  Nikolai Dvigubsky was born in Paris to émigré parents but returned to the USSR in the 1960s to study at the prestigious Soviet Academy of Cinema, where he became close friends with and a collaborator of the so-called ‘new wave’ of film directors, including Andrey Tarkovsky. In addition to his film career Dvigubsky was also a talented artist, and this exhibition presents a selection of his paintings spanning a period of more than 40 years, before his sad death in 2008.

Poetry Reading, Larissa Miller, New Poems, London

  Larissa Miller is one of Russia’s most highly-regarded writers – her poetry marries simple language with complex, intricate rhythms to ‘elevat[e] the ordinary to a higher plane.’ She has returned to Pushkin House in London to premiere a selection of her newest pieces. She will read in Russian, with her long-time translator Maggie Robertson on hand to provide explanations for non-Russian speakers.

·                     Thursday 25th November:

Talk, Professor Philip Hanson, Economic Modernisation of Russia, London

  Professor Hanson will use this talk to offer an alternative explanation of why the Russian economy was hit so hard during the global downturn of 2008-’09 – it was not, as many believe, because she was an oil exporter, but rather because of her perpetually uncertain and unpredictable business environment. He will then go on assess the economic ‘recovery’ that Russia has since experienced and the likelihood of it continuing in the future. Philip Hanson is an Emeritius Professor at the University of Birmingham and an Associate Research Fellow of the Russia and Eurasia Programme at Chatham House.
