Eurasia in 2011: Recovery bolsters political stability

It looks like a relatively calm year for Eurasia, the area encompassing the former Soviet successor states at the crossroads of Europe and Asia. For the most part, the region is politically stable and countries will continue to see slow but steady economic growth. Russia and Kazakhstan face elections in 2012, but both are governed by well entrenched soft-authoritarian regimes.

A Spectacular Corporate New Year's Party and Russia's New Normal

Tsarist Russia, just before World War I and the 1917 revolution, was a major power, with a growing economy, and vast disparities of income, perhaps similar to those visible here. But if there's one thing Russia truly has always had a surfeit of, it is world-class talent. Maybe this time, once the New Year's festivities are over, Russia will use it to resolve its problems and rise, peacefully, once again.

The Rest of the UK:

·         Monday 28th November 2010 – Thursday 31st March 2011: Exhibition, Squaring the Circle, London

One of the primary aims of the Aktis gallery, which opened in central London in spring 2010, is to highlight and celebrate the often unknown work of non-conformist Russian artists of the Soviet era (both those living in the USSR and in exile). Their latest exhibition showcases four painters of the 1960s and ‘70s: Dmitry Krasnopevtsev , Oscar Rabin, Oleg Tselkov and Vladimir Yankilevsky. Although their style of painting and subject matter is very different, they were united in their refusal to compromise their artistic integrity in the face of the condemnation of and threat of reprisals from the Soviet state. Drop in to the gallery to discover a small piece of Russia’s hidden cultural past, a world away from the rigid uniformity of state-approved socialist realist art.

·         Monday 17th January: Talk, ‘Russia’s Oil and Gas Resources: Weapon or Curse?’, London

Russia’s huge natural reserves of oil and gas are the foundation of her economy and an important bargaining chip in her political dealings with other countries. However, in this lecture Simon Pirani, a senior research fellow at the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies, will argue that they are also her Achilles heel. Not only is she over-reliant on oil and gas revenues, but this dependence is also a huge stumbling block in the path of desperately-needed economic modernisation. The talk will also cover the changes that have begun to take place in the Russian fossil fuels sector since the financial crisis of 2008, and a look at what the future may have in store.

·         Friday 21st – Saturday 22nd January: Theatre, ‘Into the Whirlwind’ (Russian language performance), London

Moscow’s Sovremenik Theatre Group have been a giant of the Russian theatrical landscape since their formation in 1956, and have toured Europe and the US extensively during the past 20 years. But, they have never performed in the UK – that is, until now! They have chosen to make their West End debut with ‘Into the Whirlwind’, a play that has already ‘taken Russia by storm’. ‘Into the Whirlwind’ is an adaptation of the memoirs of Evgenia Ginzburg, a prominent revolutionary writer and academic, who survived for seventeen years inside one of Stalin’s most notorious gulags, despite being repeatedly subjected to interrogation and torture. With a powerful central performance by Marina Neyolova, and a stage transformed into a giant cage, this is a theatre event not to be missed. (The play will be performed in Russian, with English subtitles.)

·         Thursday 27th January: Talk, ‘An Interpreter’s Glimpse Inside Russian Prisons’, London

In 1996 Russia joined the Council of Europe, a move which forced her to substantially reform her penal system in order to satisfy the Council’s human rights laws. To help Russia meet these requirements an ambitious prison-twinning project was set up whereby prison staff and governors across Western Europe would share their experience and expertise with their counterparts in Russia. Professor Michael Holman (University of Leeds) acted as an interpreter and cultural advisor for the British delegation, who were working with prisons in Ivanovo oblast, and over the next 6 years he would visit almost every correctional facility in the region. In this lecture he will talk about these experiences and show video footage from his final trip to Russia as part of the project in 2003.

-      Pushkin House, 5a Bloomsbury Square, London, WC1A 2TA

-      6.30pm - wine reception. Talk begins at 7.00pm.
