RCS Haven E-Bulletin - March 2016

Greetings, and welcome to our bulletin full of information on exciting Russian events.

RCS Haven is welcoming anyone who is interested in studying Russian language, literature and culture. We have English and Russian language lessons. There are a library, Art studio for children and Web-design Studio.
Also, the Centre provides consultations in law, finance and other aspects of work and business in Russia and Britain.

NEWS

 
Language Show Live Scotland is set to be the largest language trade show in Scotland and will bring together 5,000 language teachers, professionals and learners along with 100 exhibitors in an incredible celebration of languages.
The event combines successful elements from Language Show Live London (celebrating its 28th anniversary in 2016) with the new ‘1 + 2 approach’ policy and a focus on the Scottish and Gaelic culture and heritage.
The show is a great platform to showcase different brands in front of a highly targeted audience passionate about languages.
Language Show Live Scotland will take place on 11 - 12 March at the SECC in Glasgow.
You can meet the teachers from school at the Russian Centre in Scotland from 10am until 2pm. at Stand 524

 
On 25th of February in Police Training and Recruitment Centre in East Kilbride there was a meeting between members of Police Scotland diversity recruiting team and a representative of Russian Centre in Scotland  Haven. Police Scotland is currently recruiting both police officers and special constables into the organization.  Police Scotland is particularly keen to encourage applications from under-represented members from our communities. In their current recruitment campaign, they are looking to engage with potential applicants from all ethnic minorities and a variety of different backgrounds in an effort to be more representative of the diverse communities that they police.  
Police delegates expressed their interest in relations between Police Scotland and the Russian-speaking community. Particularly, police representatives indicated their willingness to take part in events of the Russian-speaking community in order to build trustworthy relationship. Importantly, police representatives stressed that they are willing to encourage recruitment of Russian speakers.
Moreover, police delegates stressed their commitment to arrange information sessions regarding various aspects of law and order for the Russian-speaking community. Police officers underlined that their doors are open and they are ready for co-operation.

Orthodox Church Services:
The following Scottish churches hold regular/semi-regular Orthodox services (all welcome):
Glasgow: The Parish of St. Kentigern (Russian Orthodox). Services held in Govan Old Church, 866 Govan Road, Glasgow, G51 3UU.
Edinburgh: Orthodox Community of St. Andrew (a mixture of Orthodox faiths. Services held in the Chapel of St. Andrew, 2 Meadow Lane, Edinburgh, EH8 9NR.

Art studio for Children
Art lessons for children are undergoing in RCS Haven.
Under supervision of experienced teachers, a professional artist and a specialist in early development, children study the basics of drawing and painting, language development and drama. All children are welcome on Fridays from 5:30pm till 7:30pm.

Stravinsky’s one-act opera of 1922 and Walton’s one-act ‘extravaganza’ of 1967 are based on two incisive and affectionate satirical comedies from the pens of Pushkin and Chekhov respectively. Stravinsky’s rarely heard score is a wonderful amalgam of folk, jazz and traditional Russian styles, while Walton’s score is full of colour, wit and pastiche.

The lecture about the current confrontation between Russian and Western worlds. Vladimir Pozner is one of the most prominent and recognizable personalities on Russian television and was even named the ‘face’ of Russia. Since 1991, Vladimir Pozner has hosted TV shows in the US and Russia, written several books, and is widely regarded as Russia’s No. 1 interviewer – “Russia’s Larry King”.

Alongside this is Mendelssohn's well-loved 'Hebrides' Overture and outstanding Russian-born violinist Alina Ibragimova, who performed to critical acclaim at the 2015 BBC Proms, will also perform Schumann's majestic Violin Concerto. Evening with TV journalist Yelena Khanga.
Possibly the most recognisable face of black Russia, Yelena Khanga has epitomised the liberal wave that swept Russian television in the 1990s. As a host of a popular chat show about sex—Pro Eto (About That)—she has opened a new chapter in both Russian journalism and the country’s tumultuous history of race relations. Yelena Khanga is coming to Edinburgh for a conversation about her life and career as a black journalist in the Soviet Union, the United States and modern Russia.

Director Alexander Dovzhenko’s 1930 classic Earth – with a specially commissioned new live accompaniment by Hazel Morrison and Jane Gardner - will be the opening film of the 2016 Hippodrome Festival of Silent Cinema. Earth is widely regarded as a masterpiece of the silent era, and one of the most important films of Soviet cinema.

Dmitry Vodennikov is a poet, an essayist and a radio presenter. He graduated from the department of philology of Moscow State Pedagogical University. Dmitry is an author of seven books of poetry. He writes essays and columns for several Russian newspapers and journals. For a number of years he has been hosting radio shows about contemporary Russian literature including “Notes from a Neophyte,” “From One’s Own Angle” (Своя колокольня), and “Poetic Minimum.” In 2002, he was named one of the ten best living Russian poets.

The Postman's White Nights (Andrei Konchalovsky, 2014, 111 mins) won that years' Silver Lion at the Venice film festival.  It was shot in the beautiful, distant, independently-minded Russian north-west.  All the actors are local to the area and non-professional: they play the people who live in the tiny isolated settlements of Lake Kenozero - only accessible from the mainland by boat.

Grigorovich’s Spartacus was created at the Bolshoi in 1968, and has since remained the Russian company’s signature ballet. This most spectacular production is an epic tour de force, giving full expression to the strength for which the Bolshoi’s male dancers are renowned. This three-day workshop, sponsored by Durham University'sFaculty of Arts & Humanities and the University of Glasgow’s Centre for Russian, Central and East European Studies, will explore Russian dress culture of the Imperial period from a range of disciplinary and comparative perspectives.
