This year marks 75 years since the start of the Great Patriotic War in Russia. This war brought enormous losses to the peoples of the former Soviet Union – more than 27 million people died, of which civilians comprised an overwhelming majority. Some countries lost a significant part of their population: Belarus lost more than 25% of its population, Ukraine over 16%, and Russia every 7th citizen. As days go by, fewer and fewer witnesses of those tragic times are still with us. We are delighted to invite you to meet these extraordinary people, who are visiting us here in Cambridge for the first time ever – in order to share their memories with the local community.

“Very little is known about Russian photography, hence at the moment that art sector presents excellent investment opportunities”, comments director Catherine MacDougall. “At most people are currently familiar with Russian war photography, with names like Dmitry Baltermans, Evgeny Khaldei and Georgy Zelma, as well as with some avant-garde and constructivist masters such as Alexander Rodchenko and El Lissitzky. This is just the tip of the iceberg though and we have every intention to bring Russian photography to ‘life’”.

A rare chance to meet Vladimir Maramzin, one of the best Russian writers today. He will talk about his life and work and present “The Fame Bearer” the first volume of his new trilogy “The Country Called Emigration”. He was born in 1934 and started writing in the 1950s. In love with literature, he distributed copies of the works of forbidden writers, in particular, Andrey Platonov and Vladimir Nabokov, among his friends. His own prose was published in samizdat , in particular in the collection “City-Dwellers” (Gorozhane) – this was the name of a literary group, which included Boris Vakhtin, Igor Efimov and others. In 1974 he was arrested for compiling a 5-volume samizdat edition of Brodsky’s poetry. The charge was later changed for “writing anti-Soviet prose”. After spending a year in prison Maramzin was given a suspended sentence and just like Brodsky two years before him was sent into exile.
