RCS Haven E-Bulletin – May 2018

Greetings, and welcome to our bulletin full of information on exciting Russian events. 

RCS Haven is welcoming anyone who is interested in studying Russian language, literature and culture. We have English and Russian language lessons. There are a library, Art studio for children and Web-design Studio.
Also, the Centre provides consultations in law, finance and other aspects of work and business in Russia and Britain. 

NEWS

Annual picnic of the RCS Haven's Russian School

On the 26th of May, the Russian School at RCS Haven are organising an annual picnic with active outdoor games for pupils and their parents in Pollok Country Park at 11am near the playground at the Burrell Collection.

While the kids are occupied with games, the parents can socialise, meet new people, chat with teachers, have a barbeque or take part in outdoor games with the kids.

We will be happy to see you all.


 
VACANCIES

 
Police Scotland continues to encourage members of ethnic minorities to apply for the job and once again refers to the Russian-speaking community.

RCS Haven is looking for Russian and Chess teachers for the Saturday school.
Also, we are looking for volunteers.

EDUCATION 

The School of Russian Centre in Scotland  Haven 
Classes for children are based on Russian teaching methods for primary school level native and non-native speakers.
In the current school year, lessons for all classes except the youngest take place between 11.00 and 2.00pm on Saturdays at Adelphi Centre, 12 Commercial Road, Glasgow G5 0PQ. [email protected]

Russian classes for tests and exams 
RCS Haven prepares students for taking tests and exams in the Russian language, and also conducts / organizes tests and exams: Russian for Life and Work Level 3 and level 4 (reg. No: SQA 3014177), and GCSE  Ð¸ GCE A Level in Russian (reg. No: EDEXCEL - 70233).  Classes take place on Saturdays from 12.00. to 13.30 at Adelphi Centre, 12 Commercial Road, Glasgow G5 0PQ. [email protected]

Art lessons for children are undergoing in RCS Haven.
Under supervision of experienced teachers, a professional artist and a specialist in early development, children study the basics of drawing and painting, language development and drama. All children are welcome on Fridays from 5:30pm till 7:30pm.

Classes for those who want to study Russian and English language.

The Bach Choir presents their first-ever performance of Sergei Prokofiev’s cantata Alexander Nevsky. Based on his score for Sergei Eisenstein’s 1938 epic film of the same name, Prokofiev conducted the cantata’s first performance in Moscow in May 1939.
Alexander Nevsky incorporates folk melodies, the sorrow of the battlefield, and a battle which builds to a spectacular climax. Presented alongside the cantata is Bernstein’s musical depiction of peace and unity, which uses a magical blend of Christian choral tradition and Hebrew verse. Frederick Ashton created Marguerite and Armand for Rudolf Nureyev and Margot Fonteyn in 1963, as a celebration of their unique dance partnership. The narrative was drawn from the play La Dame aux camélias by Alexandre Dumas fils, which also inspired Giuseppe Verdi’s opera La traviata. Ashton concentrates the play’s tragic essence in choreography of great intensity – Fonteyn recalled that rehearsals for the work contained ‘a passion more real than life itself’. An Evening dedicated by the Pushkin Club to Victory Day. The Evening is inspired by the play, The Fallen and The Living // Павшие и живые, which was directed by Yuri Lyubimov and performed at the Taganka Theatre in 1965, on the 20th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War. The play was dedicated to the young poets who went to the Front straight from school and university – both to those who died and to those who survived. Life and Fate is a sweeping panorama of Soviet Society, an epic tale of a country told through the fate of a single Jewish family, the Shtrum’s. Seamlessly blending theatre and music, actress Kseniya Rappoport and pianist Polina Osetinskaya bring Ivan Bunin's An Unknown Friend to life. Inspired by Bunin's correspondence to an admirer in Dublin, this little-known short story from the mid-1920s comprises several love letters from a married woman living in a foreign land to her favourite author – whom she's never met. In this unique performance, Bunin's text will be accompanied by a delicate musical programme featuring pieces from Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov, Debussy, Fauré, alongside contemporary Russian composers Anton Batagov and Pavel Karmanov. Even a glimpse into the history of the Eurovision Song Contest reveals that it has become an important symbolic event for many participant countries. Some may even consider its founding, in the post-war years, as inherently political. Even though it remains first and foremost a television show, politics does come into it. With specific focus on several former Soviet republics, this talk will discuss the role of the Eurovision Song Contest in terms of nation building and the implications that this has in terms of wider discussions concerning minority rights, freedom of expression and national identity. During the event Irina Antonova who is a president of the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow will talk about ways of establishing modern art in traditional museums and how art finds new means to speak to viewers and change their understanding of everyday life.
All the raised money will be transferred to charitable foundation Life Line in Russia to safe 13-year-old Kamila Batrshina.
